After emancipation day in 1865, many black families moved into Webb City from Carbondale because there were no other places to live until white people started coming back into town again. In 1923, an incorporated municipality was established by combining parts of Carbondale and Webster Groves; this became known as Webb City because it included most of what is today known as north central St. Louis County including the portions that now make up Webb City proper (north of I-64). In 1955, when Saint Louis County merged with Missouri to form a new state government under Governor Roy Blunt, most of what is now east central Saint Louis County - including Webb City - joined forces with southcentral SaintLouis County to become Carroll Township which then became part of Streator Township before finally becoming part of WebbCity proper in 2000. The first post office opened in 1853 in Caroline Webe's home; it closed 25 years later on September 26th due to mail fraud allegations against Webber family members James Webber II (1811-1873) and his son Frederick Webber (1847-1923). The first store opened at 251 N State street on February 1st 1859 by Jno Hargrave & Bros.; it closed December 31st 1860 due to financial difficulties caused by the war effort etcetera etcetera etcetera... The Webb family had first come to the area in 1841, when they were driven out of their home near Mount Vernon by a group of Mormons who were looking for new land to settle. Captain Webb helped them find a place to live and began helping with the farming and ranching operations that continued until after World War II. The town experienced growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s as farmers started settling around it. They built homes, churches, schools and businesses. In 1916, Webb City became a city limits addition to Springfield, Missouri. This event led to some changes within the community; for example, more people started coming into town from outlying areas because it was now part of an urban area with more services available. In recent years, there have been several efforts made to revitalize Webb City; for example, an effort has been made to start a library in the community and another has been made to improve transportation options within the municipality so that residents can access goods and services closer by without having to leave their homes.
