Webb City is a town in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 1,986 at the 2010 census, up from 1,844 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settlement in Webb City was made on July 6, 1838 by three men who named themselves "Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church" and established a small farm near what is now Main Street. On October 7, 1838, a post office was established at Webb City with Wm. Hargrave as its first clerk and Phebe Hamlin as its first stenographer. In 1840, two more men were added to the original settlers: John Meeks and James Sells (a brother of Senator James Fenton)). On December 5, 1840 Jno. Ainge granted land to George Neely for $200 (). This land included most of what is today north side of Main Street between West First and West Second Streets. The plat for Webb City had not been filed yet when Ainge made his donation so it cannot be said definitively that he gave this land specifically to Webb City; however it seems likely that he did because it would have been necessary for him to become a citizen of Webb City since he donated land there himself On May 12, 1841 Gershom Sprague became one of the trustees for Webster County School District #1 (). He served until his death in 1897 . sprague donated over $2 million dollars towards education in Webster County during his lifetime
Webb City is located in Randolph County, Missouri. The population was 1,965 at the 2000 census. It is a small town that experienced significant growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1892, Webb City became the second town in Randolph County to be established. The first town was Centerville. The city of Webb City was founded on July 10, 1892 by John Ladd and his wife Eliza Cogburn as a place for farmers to trade goods they had brought with them from Illinois. By 1903, Webb City had become an important center for cotton farming in the region and had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1907, Webb City became part of the newly formed Kansas Citrus Commission which oversaw citrus production in southern Missouri. In 1912, Webb City was designated as the capital of Randolph County under statehood laws passed by Governor James Boggs. The city's economy quickly grew due to its strategic location between two major cotton-growing areas in southeastern Missouri and its access to Interstate 55 which made it an ideal location for businesses and residents to expand their operations
