The first guns in Webb City were probably made by the Smith & Wesson company. In 1849, a group of men from Missouri started the Webb City Arsenal to produce arms. The first guns were made with percussion caps and shot balls. soon after, the company started producing rifles and pistols. In 1865, John C. Frisbie joined the arsenal as an employee. He is credited with designing the first rifle in Webb City- the Frisbie Rifle. After Frisbie’s death in 1868, his son took over management of the armory and continued to produce firearms until 1895. In 1899, John Foust took over management of Webb City Arsenal and continued to produce firearms until his death in 1922. It is interesting to note that all these employees had their own families back home who helped run the business during their lifetime- this was very unusual at that time. After World War I ended, Webb City became known for its military contracts due to its location at strategic points on both coasts of Missouri (the Army garrisoned there). However, production slowly stopped as new technologies emerged and it wasn’t until 1945 when Webb City finally regained its place as a center for firearm production because of advances in gunpowder technology which made rifles more accurate than ever before possible!
