The town name deigns from the Battle of Gettysburg where General Robert E. Lee's Confederate army fought against Union forces under George Meade. The first settlers were Levi C. Webb and his wife Mary A. Webb who arrived in 1881 from Kentucky with their two children, John and Martha Kappler Webb (a daughter of German immigrants). In 1889, they had six more children: Sarah M., David J., Anna L., Edwin P., Charles W., and Roy Fenton Webb (a son of Roy Fenton). In 1902, the Weebbs sold their farm to John Henson for $3,500; Henson also bought a home there in 1907. That same year, the town plat was filed which included a road named "Webster Boulevard" after Webster County Mayor James Webber and District Court Judge William Ransom Potter Jr.. In 1912, residents voted to rename themselves "Webb City" after GeneralRobertELee'sparamilitaryarmyfightagainstUnionforcesunderGeorgeMeadeatGettysburg on November 19th that year; this village would later become part of St Louis County KCMO following its incorporation on April 14th 1912 as part of an overall consolidation plan by the Missouri General Assembly that eliminated most towns within Clay County includingand neighboring Mount Vernon Heights (which had been established as a separate municipality in 1911). A post office called "Webb City" was established in 1882 by Levi C Weebb & His Wife Mary A Weebb; it served until 1907 when it was replaced by "St Louis Post Office". St Joseph Catholic Church is located adjacent to the original WEBB CITY POST OFFICE which still stands today & serves as the primary church for both the Town Of Webb City & surrounding communities includingMount Vernon Heights
Webb City was founded by John Webb in 1837. The city was named after John Webb's father, who died in 1835. In 1851, the city incorporated and became a town. In 1870, the town changed its name to Webb City and it remains that name to this day.
