The town's name may be derived from John Webb's birthplace which lies near the center of town - "webb" means "place where water flows." In 1904, Webb City voted to become an independent city and it did so by annexing portions of neighboring townships including Tecumseh and Pleasant Hill. On July 1, 1907, negotiations began for Webb City to merge with neighbouring Bentonville with both cities having over 2,000 residents but only Bentonville received approval from the state legislature before merger could take place; this action helped solidify Webb City's status as an independent municipality within the Springfield-Springfield-Jefferson (S3J) metropolitan area. The first annexation took place on October 17th 1907 when Bentonville annexed White Oak Heights and Highland Park adding those communities to its totals; these annexations followed other similar votes throughout 1909 until all thirteen municipalities had been annexed into S3J resulting in a population increase from 2,500 to 3,500 people during their incorporation process! In 1916 Jens Agerholm became mayor after being elected president pro tempore ofthe Senate while incumbent Everett Witherspoon vacated his seat to run for governor; Agerholm served two terms as mayor before becoming city attorney general under then-mayor Hiram Holland in 1932 following Winthrop Aldrich's election as governor which made him sole administrator for all city government functions!
