Webb City is located in the Missouri River Valley, about 25 miles south of St. Louis and 30 miles north of Kansas City. The town was founded in 1854 by John Webb, a slaveholder and territorial surveyor, and his wife Eliza. The Webers named their new town after their brother, Ebenezer Webb, who had been born in England in 1793. In 1857 the community became a county seat when it was organized from portions of Lawrence County. The population declined during the 1870s as transportation improved and wheat farming became more popular; however, by 1900 Webb City had a population of 1,500. By 1910 its population had increased to 4,000 and it remained an important agricultural center until the 1920s when it lost its importance due to mechanization and other factors. Webb City occupies a strategic location on the Missouri River Valley between two major cities: Saint Louis to the north-west and Kansas City to the south-east. It is bordered by unincorporated areas which make up Randolph Township to the east; Webster Township to the south-west; Independence Township to the west; Moberly Township to the northwest; and Douglas County (Kansas)to the north-northwest. The river forms both city boundaries and limits on many sides: eastward towards Saint Louis’s Fox Park neighborhood; westward towards Shawnee Mission Road/Upper Illinois State Route 67 (Kirkwood Highway); northwestwards towards Interstate 44 (I-44 Business / I-64 exit 5). To one side of downtown Webb City is built upon Botanical Gardens opened in 1865 as part of Washington University’s campus; while on another side much higher ground lies acres now used for housing developments such as Loews Venetian Hotel (now Gibbs Center), Marriott Marquis hotel (#2), Loews Renaissance hotel (#1), Keystone Generating Station #1 & 2 – now part of Audi AG car dealership complex – Shell Refinery No 7 – also known as “The KG Station” since 1903 - Old US 66 just outside city limits There are several significant buildings from early history that can still be seen today including Webb House estate built c1850–60 on land donated by John Webb III which still stands today across from central park.; two churches:, First Baptist Church built 1863–65 at 24th & Market Streets which served African American congregants until 1978 when Rev.(Mrs.) Alice Paula Brown led an effort within my congregation destroyed all evidence remaining inside church before commencement services thereby effecting public repudiation thereof ; Methodist Episcopal Zion Church erected 1861 at Ninth Street & Elm Street near current day McLeod Mall opposition group burned building following service with Molotov cocktails later same year 48th Parallel Road once intersected with I-64 just outside city limits but has since been truncated so only portions remain visible nowatin' backyards

As families from surrounding towns left to settle near Kansas River Reservation boundaries, George and Sarah Webb continued to maintain a residency within WebbCity limits until 1900 when they moved out permanently to avoid temptation by Sitting Bull's Sioux warriors
Webb City was founded in 1836 by John Webb and his wife, Mary. The city was named after John Webb's father-in-law, Ebenezer Webb. In 1856, the city limits were expanded to include what is now the northwest corner of Boone County. In 1870, the city annexed a part of St Francois County. The city's population grew steadily until it reached its peak in 1924 when it had a population of over 20,000. The decline in population followed World War II and the economic recession that followed. In 1984, Webb City merged with nearby Springfield to become one large municipality.
