In 1840, they built an overhanging chicken coop on their farm which is still standing to this day. Their daughter Martha married John Wofford and they moved to Illinois Avenue where they raised five children: Martha Fenton Wofford (1841-1917), James Addison Wofford (1843-1927), Charles Edwin Wofford (1845-1924), Winifred Amelia Wofford (1848-1925) and Wilbur Ira Wofford (1850-1920). In 1851, John Atherton established a mill here on Missouri River which grew into one of the largest mills in the state by 1865 when it became known as Atherton Mill Co., Ltd.. In 1875, Atherton sold his mill to George Lisle who renamed it Webb Mills Incorporated with headquarters located at 309 N Wright Road in Webb City. By 1902, Webb Mills had become one of America's leading textile manufacturers with mills located throughout North America including plants in Canada and Mexico as well as plants in New England and Europe. The company went public on Wall Street under the name Joad Manufacturing Company on July 24, 1916. After World War II ended there was consolidation among American textile companies with Webb Mills being acquired by Henschel Corporation in 1951 for $1 billion dollars becoming Henschel Weevil Corporation.]] In recent years many businesses have closed within Webb City but some remain such as The Fitzroy Grill which has been open since 1967 and then bought by Bennigan's Pizza following fire damage that occurred during a storm; The Gadsden Museum which reopened after being closed for several months due to asbestos removal; Old Main Hall now used as an event hall by local high school students; home of Automotive Heritage Museum also closed after asbestos damage occurred;
Webb City was founded in 1837 by a group of German immigrants. The community grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, thanks to its strategic location on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River. In 1859, Webb City became a county seat, and in 1865 it amalgamated with neighboring Liberty to form Webb County. By 1870, Webb City had reached its peak as a commercial and cultural center for the area. However, due to technological advances and widespread economic depression in the country, Webb City declined between 1870 and 1890. In World War I, Webb City served as an airfield for American forces fighting in Europe. After the war ended, the town lost much of its importance as a commercial center until it regained some prominence during the late 20th century through various incarnations including Webanomics (a program focused on creating jobs within local communities), African American Studies Center (AAC), and now Webrevity (an online platform that allows users to share their stories).
