In 1875, Captain John Webb died at the age of ninety-six and his widow Martha took over management of Webb City affairs. She continued to manage the town until her death in 1913. During her time as mayor, Martha made many improvements to Webb City such as developing a new water system, constructing a schoolhouse, building a courthouse and more importantly improving transportation options within the town by creating an addition to the local bank that allowed for shipping containers to be delivered directly into downtown Webb City without having to go through Kansas City's portage system
Webb City was founded in 1837 by Levi Webb and his wife Maria. The city grew rapidly due to the influx of people from Illinois and Missouri. In 1857, the city became a county seat with the creation of Webb County. In 1916, the city was completely destroyed by a fire that burned for days.
