Webb City has many buildings from when it first started growing as a town that are still standing today including the original Post Office building which is now used as apartments (and once served as the home of Wichita Kansan radio stations WPKI-FM and WKRC-AM), West Side Methodist Church (now known as First Baptist Church), Elmwood Cemetery (now known as East Elmwood Cemetery), Main Street Schoolhouse (now known as Citizens Bank Park), Depot Square Shopping Center (now known as Webber's Discount Store), and several other small businesses/houses that have since been replaced or demolished including Piggly Wigglygeneral merchandise store which burned down on December 16th, 2006 while serving customers with candy bars being sold inside due to the poor fire safety ratings of that particular business property owner at the time; Stonington Drugstore which closed in 2002 after more than 50 years serving residents here also having closed multiple stores throughout this region over that time span plus another store located near MO-IL line just east of town across US-36) all were replaced by larger local retail chains with much more sophisticated marketing strategies during this same time period such as Walmart Supercenter built next door to Citizens Bank Park - this large Sam's Club type structure opened up localopportunities for these newer retailers to compete head on against each other rather than waiting for their larger rivals to open up shop first In recent years there has been some redevelopment going on within Municipal boundaries specifically aroundWebber's Discount Store (+new housing developments) which although not directly impacting Webb City itself but does impact surrounding neighborhoods provides much needed employment opportunities +/- new park built adjacent to Webster gun range also providing employment opportunities +/- creek diverted into newly constructed soccer field providing additional play space for youth + wildlife
Webb City was founded in 1836 by Levi Webb and his wife Martha. The city was named for Captain Nathan Webb, who explored the area in 1824. The first store in Webb City was built on the current site of the old railroad depot. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 had a population of around 100 people. In 1846, Webb City became part of St. Louis County and began to grow rapidly again. By 1850, the population had grown to over 1,000 people and it reached 2,000 by 1860. In 1870, Webb City became a municipality and experienced a rapid growth as an incorporated city with its own government. By 1890, there were over 4,500 people living in Webb City. In 1916, the city was renamed after General John J Pershing because of World War I efforts to promote military recruitment within St. Louis County.
