Webb City was laid out in 1872 by George W. Webb and named after him. The first post office in Webb City was established on December 12, 1872, and remained open until it closed on July 15, 1902. The first settler in Webb City was John Withers who arrived on August 3, 1872 from Carthage County, Tennessee. He built a log cabin near the present day intersection of US 41 and MO 64. With only two residents living there at the time of its establishment, Webb City served as an outpost for many miles around until it became its own municipality in 1904 when all of Jackson County were consolidated into one government under the name of St. Louis
