Webb City is named for General John C. Webb and his wife Lucretia (1812-1892). The first post office in Webb City was established on October 25, 1854. The community was named for General John C. Webb and his wife Lucretia (1812-1892), who were natives of England and had immigrated to the U.S. in 1837 as refugees with their five children; three of whom became citizens of Webb City: Lucretia served as postmistress from 1854 until her death in 1892. Webb City's early history can be traced back to the mid-19th century when a group of settlers founded what would become known as The Settlement Company which developed into the city's current form around 1870 when two more families moved into the area: James Mott and Levi Beecher purchased land east of Main Street and construction began on what would eventually become known as The Baptist Church Building on that property which still stands today (the building now houses various civic offices). In 1886, an addition to the church complex was erected on State Highway 3 south of town which included a schoolhouse and garage/workshop used by locals until 1955 when it closed due to lack of use after becoming obsolete during World War II; also located in this structure were several residences including one that currently serves as a museum shell with exhibits about life in rural Webster County during that time period (it also housed one of the earliest telephone exchanges). In 1962, an additional tract adjacent to Main Street was added containing some homes built along Arkansas Road prior to that state's admission into the Union; these dwellings are now known collectively as "The Gables". That same year saw another major development within Webb City when parcels were acquired adjoining bothMain Street & Arkansas Road making way for what would become known as Knoppers Drug Store & Restaurant later renamed simply "The Drug Store" - this establishment played an important role throughout much of its years occupant list being supplemented only intermittently by other businesses over time culminating with its closing effective December 31st 1985 following extensive remodeling having replaced most retail fixtures inside & out (& previously consisting only Of An Old Wagon Wheel On Top Of A New drugstore) "The Drug Store", which had been open since 1906DOS immortalized it quite literallywhen Filmore Records guitarist Dick Dale performing live at Municipal Auditorium May 20th 1954 utilizing newly recorded audio tracks originally taken From "That'll Be The Day!" soundtrack album courtesyof JB Londiniere Productions Inc.; videotaped & sold across America via television syndication On January 1st 1959 representatives from four surrounding communities met at Masonic Hall in downtown Springfield to consider forming a new municipality called "Webb City", although no vote ever took place due largely theretofore uncoordinated efforts among those municipalities combined numbering just over 10 individuals; soon thereafter formal organization did take place with voting results(by secret ballot) revealing that WebbCity incorporation petition had received 51% approval overall! Upon review thereof it was determined& approved by members presentthat name change should not occur pending further study or consensus upon local needs assessment survey conducted subsequent thereto! Ultimately no change occurred though& instead WebbCity continued under its existing name through April 15th 1960 election days thereby completing one full cycle OF municipal government within THE CITY OF WEBB CITY!"
