Washington, Mo., is a small town in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. The population was 1,402 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first European to visit Washington was Capt. James Cook on Oct. 26, 1778 during his third voyage around the world and named it after Prince George's County, Maryland - then part of Virginia - as he sighted it from his ship HMS "Endeavour". In 1802, General Anthony Wayne founded a military post here named Fort Wayne after himself and this name survived until 1825 when it was renamed Washington because President James K. Polk had movedaux here from Galena, Illinois. In 1827 President Andrew Johnson gave Washburn University its present location in what is now downtown Washington; before that it had been located on Randolph Road east of downtown Springfield. Since the turn of the century, many businesses have opened up in Washington including a furniture store (nowclosed), two banks (now closed), four restaurants (two now closed), three medical offices (one now closed) and one dental office (now reopened). A major development came about with construction of Interstate 55 which bypassed much of town and made it easier for people to get to larger areas such as Springfield and Columbia Heights beyond town limits. This also led to an increase in business activity along Route 66 which runs through town center between I-55 and Route 64A/US Highway 27 which serves as its main artery providing access to both large cities across country as well as smaller towns within those cities close by like Lincoln Park south of I-55/Route 66 junction and West Plains north of I-55/Route 64A junction etc.; making life much easier for residents who rely on that corridor for shopping, dining out or other activities outside their homes.... more
Tasers have been around for over 30 years, and are now one of the most commonly used weapons in law enforcement. Originally designed as a less violent alternative to firearms, tasers have become increasingly popular due to their efficiency, safety features, and ability to incapacitate an opponent with a single hit. In 1978, the U.S. Department of Justice issued guidelines recommending that all law enforcement officers use tasers as a last resort instead of using firearms when needed. The following year, the National Institute on Law Enforcement Standards and Technology (NILEST) released its report "Taser Use by Law Enforcement: A Review of Equipment Issues" which outlined many safety concerns related to the weapon's use. In 1992, the NILEST created the Taser Safety Committee which recommended that all police departments adopt rules requiring officer training on how to properly use tasers. This led to increased regulation of taser weaponry across different jurisdictions, including California in 1995 and New York City in 2003. Today, there is widespread acceptance of tasers across different cultures and organizations worldwide. In 2015 alone, more than 1 million people were treated with tasers in United States law enforcement agencies - an increase of almost 50% from 2014 - making it one of the most common weapons used by officers nationwide. There are several factors that contribute to this growing popularity; firstly, tasing has been shown to be extremely effective at subduing opponents without inflicting significant damage or fatalities; secondly, it is very safe when used correctly; thirdly, it can be easily adapted for different policing needs; fourthly - and perhaps most importantly - it is seen as an acceptable form of ammunition by many communities who feel that its uses do not constitute excessive force

Washington, Mo., is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by James W. Washington and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named for George Washington, the first president of the United States. Washington grew up in nearby Springfield, Mo., and became a lawyer there before moving to Washington County, Mo., in 1848 to help found what would become the city of St. Louis. In 1850 he married Martha Ewing and they moved to Independence Township near Rolla. There they raised their family until James W.'s death in 1861. Martha continued to live with her son and daughter-in-law until her death in 1902; then her son took over management of the home as well as the township businesses. The Washingtons are buried on Mount Zion Cemetery there. In 1836, when James W.'s father died certificate shows that he owned one acre (0.40 ha) within present day Washington Township east of US Highway 63 where now stands Union City Elementary School District No.? 1 school building on land leased from Judge Isaac Cushing for $100 per year), James W., his mother Rebecca (born October 3, 1798 – May 30, 1840), brother John Watkins (October 12, 1800 – December 9th 1865), sister Sarah Watkins (February 7th 1802 – July 28th 1886) all came together with their families to purchase this tract which at that time lay within present day Rolla Township east of US Highway 63 & west of current day Union City Elementary School District No.? 1 school building site from Judge Isaac Cushing for $100 per year). The pioneers were determined that this new community would be called "Washington" after George Washington because at that time no other settlement had been established east orwest of Springfield & Rolla limits- only St Louis! Thankful for guidance from an early ancestor who may have been our namesake! JamesWatkins arrived here on horseback Jan 6 1840 also coming downriver on horse drawn wagon/wagon train which stopped just south side old road bridge over river about 4 miles south today's US Highway 63 crossing just north side old road bridge over River between 2 large rock outcroppings leading into stream: One more stop today’s [Jan] 10 1840 while traveling southbound along river bank past large rock outcropping leading into stream meeting bluff north side doing so passed modern day intersection First National Bank building now known as Union City Elementary School District No.? 1 across busy street corner lots adjoining S&H lock Manufacturing Co [St Louis] building also located hereabouts back then known as Phelps Dodge store built on lot now occupied by Verizon Business Center At this point we are 5 ½ miles NNW & 2 ½ miles SE Missouri State Capitol Building lies NE Florida Avenue (& Sabine Dr.) long ago laid out by Surveyor General Nicholas Biddle including entire area around Capitol Grounds today’s “Old Courthouse Road” running NW bisected by original courthouse square map boundaries laid out by Surveyor General Nicholas Biddle himself prior to statehood Feb 1518 boundary adjustments made during SecondMissouri Republic Govt era thru 11 Jun 1870 main street starting at Capital Buildings NW cornering Sabine Dr.* just inside MO State line—agonizingly close yet so very far apart due mainly to huge obstruction caused by intervening trees (& other obstructions mentioned earlier)—still viewable from Capitol Grounds via Madison Barracks Road where residences currently stand today JamesWatkins did not live long enough to enjoy developing this new community which soon developed shortages of waterpower necessary for mills needed money galore raised taxes too much trouble getting people wanting anything done especially since he didn't even get paid his $100 annual lease! Unfortunately things got worse still when Washburne Randolph Farnsworth purchased land adjacent S&H Lock Manufactory Co [St Louis], erected structures but three years later burned them down leaving behind shoeshelf/fireplace brick wall height=27 ft frontage=8 ft depth=24in width=6in property valued at $500 maybe more bought from Farnsworth but same lot remained unoccupied ever since...It wasn't until 1865 when John Hinkle started living hereabouts & purchasing land adjoining S&H Lock Manufactory Co [StLouis] began developing business some nice houses were started but these days almost nothing remains except a few foundations perhaps some periodical repairs done recent history books show occasional visits from historical Society members but it's difficult finding out more about it
