Washington was founded in 1783 by Captain James K. Polk and Colonel George M. Custer as Fort Washington on the east bank of the Missouri River. It served as a military post until 1821, when it was redesignated Fort Leavenworth after General James Leavenworth, who had commanded the American forces at the Battle of Buena Vista. The fort was abandoned in 1836 and burned down in 1837. In 1975, Washington was designated a National Historic Landmark for its role in the American Revolution and its connection to Kansas City, Missouri.
