In the early 1800s, Washington, Missouri was a small town of about 3,000 people. The area now known as Springfield was first settled in 1811 by fur traders and missionaries. By 1825, the town had grown to around 10,000 people and it became an important settlement during the time of the Mexican War. In 1861, when Missouri seceded from the United States, Washington was one of the few towns in central Missouri that remained loyal to the Union. During World War I, Washington served as a major airbase for American forces in Europe. After the war ended, Washington reverted back to its rural roots and experienced some economic decline until it opened its borders to immigrants in 1924. By 1970, Washington had become an urban center with over 30% of its population living within its limits. However, due to economic stagnation and a lack of cultural diversity (especially among African Americans), local businesses have struggled to compete with those situated farther away. With new efforts made to revitalize downtownWashington since 2007-2008 including art galleries and restaurants-the future looks bright for this once struggling city!

In 1865, Union General Joseph Hooker destroyed most of what remains of Republican Missouri during his march towards Springfield to take that city for the Confederate army under Robert E. Lee; this destruction included burning down many homes and businesses within sight of Washington City's existing citizens—a event which would forever be remembered as one of history's largest acts of vandalism against civilian property (Hooker claimed he did this because he believed that military targets were more important than civilians). Despite this attack on local society and its consequent loss of business revenue for years to come (the town would eventually reestablish itself as an economically vibrant community), many residents nonetheless chose to remainresidential throughout the war effort due to their close proximity to military installations such as Fort Donelson and Corinth Army Depot (now known as Kansas City International Airport). After the war ended, however, many returnedhome again due to economic reasons while others moved away altogether because they no longer saw any real value or opportunity availablein postwar America. Grant purchased 1 million acres (4 square miles) along the banks of theMissouri River from local farmers for $1 per acre ($10 million today). Washington was founded in 1777 by Captain John France and his men after they discovered the Louisiana Purchase. The town was named for George Washington, who had been born in Scotland a few years earlier. The first store was built in 1778, and the first post office opened in 1801. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson moved the seat of government from Springfield to Washington because he felt that it was too far from the military forces needed to fight against Mexico. In 1865, when Missouri became an Confederate state, most of Washington went with her. However, a small group of residents voted to rejoin the Union and remain in the city. When Missouri seceded again in 1861, most of Washington returned to Missouri but some residents chose to stay and keep their homes in Washington. In 1870, Washington became a county within St Louis County. It remained part of that county until 1903 when it became its own independent municipality
