Washington was a small town in Missouri when the Civil War started. On April 12, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Washington and its Union garrison of 10 men. The Union defenders fought bravely, but by the end of the day there were only six men remaining on hand to defend the town. Three days later, Lee withdrew his forces and Washington was abandoned by both sides. The town quickly lost its importance and fell into disrepair. In 1865, it was abandoned again and became a ghost town. However, in 1892 it was reactivated as a business center for the region due to its proximity to St Louis. Today, Washington is a small community with few permanent residents and it is considered an historical ruin.
