There was never enough land to allow all six towns to merge so they evolved into their present forms over time based on mousey decisions by county commissioners or lack thereof. In 1860, when Kansas statehood came about, Granite City voted not to secede from Missouri but joined Kansas as its second city. In 1898, when Dawson County gained its own government with a central courthouse and jail located near the old graniteware factory complex across from downtown Shively which still stands today as a museum open daily from 9am-4pm ($7 adults/$6 seniors/seniors/children under 12 free). The first white man to live in Washington, Missouri was Isaac Brock in 1819. The town of Washington was founded by the surveyor and landowner James Wilkinson in 1837. In 1839, the United States Congress approved a bill creating a township in St. Francois County named for General David Reimer, who had fought at the Battle of Waterloo. The town of Washington was incorporated on November 15, 1840. The town prospered from its early days thanks to its location near the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers and its access to transportation routes. In 1845, the Kansas-Nebraska Act created a new state called Nebraska out of parts of Missouri and Iowa. This caused a great deal of excitement inWashington because it meant that many jobs and homes would go away if Kansas became part of Nebraska. On January 3, 1847, local farmers voted to secede from Missouri and form their own state called Jefferson County which included most of Washington Township including the now-demolished town of Washington. The residents of Washington gradually abandoned theirtown as businesses closed down or moved away; by 1870 only 2 people lived there remaining: an old woman who died in 1904 and her grandson who continued to live there until his death in 1978
