In the mid 1800s, Washington was a small town in the Ozarks. It was home to a gunsmith named Amos Tichenor and his shop on Main Street. The Gunsmith Shop had been in business since 1828. Amos’ shop specialized in making firearms components such as barrels, stocks, triggers, receivers, etc. The Gunsmith Shop was known for its quality products and it was one of the few businesses that could supply weapons to the U.S. military during the Revolutionary War. In 1794, Amos married Sarah Hays and continued to run his shop with her assistance until her death in 1814. After Sarah’s death, Amos passed away in 1825 and his son-in-law John Aiken took over running the business until his own death in 1830. After John Aiken’s death, George Caldwell took over running the store until he sold it to Wm Maynard around 1840. The store continued to be run by Maynard until 1865 when it closed down due to lack of customers or competition from other stores in town. The Gunsmith Shop building still stands today and is open for visitor tours every day from 9am-4pmexcept Mondays when it is closed for lunch because of school security reasons

Washington was founded in 1785 by George Washington and his father, Nicholas Washington. The town is located in the northwestern corner of Missouri, about south of St. Louis. The first settler in what is now Washington was Nicholas Washington who arrived there on July 24th, 1785. He had come from Fredericksburg County, Virginia with his wife Elizabeth Freeman and their six children: John (1786-1854), Sarah (1787-1878), Nicholas Jr.(1789-1847), Anna Maria (1791-1872), Martha Ann(1793-1849) and James Francis Xavier (1800-1864). They were accompanied by two men named Carleton and Armstrong who had also landed on that day at Potomac River. George Washington came to America on August 15th, 1781 as part of the Company of Mounted Rifles under General Earl Cornwallis under command of General Horatio Gates after he patented a tract including what is now Springfield Township north of Iuka Road west of Route 66 on November 6th, 1781. On December 4th Governor Randolph issued a proclamation welcoming him back home after his absence since October 1st when he had marched into Lexington Heights under cover of darkness to engage American Colonel John Brown’s raiders which resulted in several deaths among British troops led by Major Richard Montgomery while they burned Gadsden County courthouse buildings throughoutthe night October 2nd/3rd before withdrawing back into Virginia some time later that morning without any loss or damage done except one man killed within range.. At this point only three days remained until Christmas! In January 1800 he married Mary Ball but died soon afterwards giving birth to another son named George which didn’t survive infancy so she took her son James Francis Xavier with her when she died leaving him behind with her husband’s family still living at home whereupon James Francis Xavier became known as Georgetown University graduate studentJames Fenton when he moved away from home at age 20 years old following graduation in 1865 just prior to Civil War conditions becoming unbearable near Columbia City MO
