In 1865, Heiney relocated his company to Mount Pleasant and continued making firearms until 1902 when he sold all interests to Colonel George Custer’s son-in-law William Aiken. At that time, Mount Pleasant became the home of the first pistol school in America. After Aiken’s death in 1907, Mount Pleasant again became the center of gun production due to its location on Topeka Boulevard which connected two major railroads in town. In 1859, when Kansas Territory was organized into states, Washington County became one of its five counties. The county seat changed from Sibleyville to present-day Washington three years later when Territorial Judge George Haggerty designated it as the new capital of that newly formed territory (). It is part of St. Louis County and is bordered by Ferguson to the north, Kansas City to the south, and Jefferson City on the east. The first known permanent settler in Washington was James Sisson who erected a cabin in 1837 near present day Mount Pleasant Avenue and Howell Road. A post office called Washington was established in 1838, and remained in operation until 1862 when it was discontinued due to the American Civil War. In 1861, General Robert Ewing took control of St. Louis County from Governor John Ashcroft and made Washington his seat of government; this relocation caused some controversy as many residents did not want their new county center located closer to Springfield than they wanted their original home town of Washington within St. Louis County boundaries - this issue would be resolved two years later when Ewing annexed both towns into his new county limits). In 1870, George Stephenson built a railroad line through Washington which became known as "The Old Line" because it ran along what is now Mount Pleasant Avenue (now Union Pacific Railroad tracks) between Bellefontaine Cemetery (now part of University Park) and Forest Park before intersecting with the Illinois Central Railroad at Academy Hill just east of downtown Saint Louis; this line helped add significant jobs to the area during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. The area around today's Georgetown neighborhood began developing as businesses started opening up during this time period; one such developer was Ebenezer Lyon who constructed several large homes on Air street between Randolph Street and Griggs Avenue which remain extant today as part of Georgetown's historical district. During World War II many local soldiers served overseas including Sgt./Lt.(jg.) Eldon Hurbach who fought with Company C 2nd Battalion 116th Infantry Regiment serving behind enemy lines in Europe from 1944-1945 After World War II ended many families returned home while others continued living off revenues generated by property sales throughout central Missouri The population reached 11,500 by 1960 but slowly decreased over ensuing decades due to numerous moves away from central MO due to various reasons including suburbanization/ gentrification elsewhere within MO or changes within federal government policies that impacted personal income tax rates across all parts of America . However by 2000 efforts had been put into place by Mayor Tom Weisner (who succeeded Gaylord Nelson) that led to an increase in population growth – resulting in present-day 10,827 residents As recently as 2010 there were still 835 people living alone or apart from family membersowntown Saint Louis according to city records .
