Washington, Mo. was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and his wife, Marilla. The town was named for George Washington and it became a city in 1865. The population of the city increased from 1,500 in 1836 to over 25,000 by 1870. In 1907, Washington was merged with neighboring Jefferson City to form the Missouri River Valley City Council seat.
