The first gunsmith in town was A.M. Wickersham and Sons which built pistols, shotguns, revolvers and rifles for use by the local militia and other citizens. The first organized shooting event took place at Fort Benton on July 4, 1838 when a group of men from St. Louis shot off a number of rounds from their cannons at a game of buglers’ ball Purcell made an exhibition appearance that year as part of Missouri State Fair festivities held in Springfield on April 12th & 13th (the date is now Independence Day). On October 10th 1840, two days after the attack on Fort Sumter by Confederate forces, several hundred people gathered around Harper’s Ferry to watch “a most spirited firing contest between Colored Troops and White Citizens” which ended with three shots being fired from a cannonball into a crowd estimated at about 100 captives including twelve slaves who were paraded before their captors before release unharmed. The fairgrounds were again used for military purposes during the American Civil War when General Robert E Lee ordered his army to rest there while he attacked Union positions around Saint Louis on August 14th 1861; these areas were also defended by Confederate troops under Brigadier General James Hagee who fought hand-to-hand with Union officer David Brion Davis as they tried to retreat through a wooded area near Harper’s Ferry carrying supplies for Union forces besieged at Manassas Junction outside Richmond Virginia In 1865, gun cleaning supplies started being brought overland across Missouri River by wagon train led by Captain John Ritchie joining up withGeneral Ulysses S Grant's army advancing towards Memphis Arkansas after having stopped at Harper's Ferry just prior to its crossing The last guns cleaned in Washington County were those used in World War II .
