In 1870, Washington became an incorporated city with a meetinghouse and three wards (northwest corner of Main Street, east side of East Capitol Street, south side of West Capitol Street). It had a population of 1,000 people. In 1876 it became one of twenty-four towns in Jefferson County created as part of the Kansas Territory following Kansas' admission into the United States on November 12th, 1876. On January 1st 1907 it merged with nearby Corinth to form Corinth–Washington City (renamed again to Corinth–Washington City on July 1st 1909). On February 14th 1923 Washingtons incorporation as a city formally took place with Mayor JF Smith becoming the first mayor ever elected from that city limits alone The economy for most years has been linked largely to agriculture although there are some small businesses sprinkled throughout town which have sprung up around recent incarnations like Walmart or KFC restaurants

Washington is a small town in northwestern Missouri. It was founded by the crew of the USS Constitution during the American Revolutionary War. The town was named for General George Washington and his army, which had landed on the nearby prairies to free the enslaved people of Missouri from British tyranny. The town grew rapidly after it became known as a stop on stagecoach routes between Springfield, Illinois, and Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1849, Washington Post editor Elijah Muhammad settled in Washington and helped start the Nation of Islam there. In 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Newtonia for an inspection of military operations in western Missouri and found that much of the country had been burned down by Confederate forces during the war. He ordered General William Tecumseh Sherman to burn Washington over his objections because he thought it would demoralize Union troops fighting against their own government. Sherman did not realize that General George McClellan was also visiting Newtonia at this time and saw Grant's order before it was published.(1) Washington post office opened on November 12th, 1865, with mail coming into town from Rolla and other nearby towns.(2) In 1867-68, local merchants formed a company to build a new courthouse that replaced an existing structure located near present day Interstate 55./ (3) On July 4th 1870, citizens of Washington petitioned Congress to annex what is now Kansas as part of United States.(4) However this effort failed when Representative Charles Sumner refused to sign a bill authorizing annexation.(5)(6)(7)(8) In 1907–08 Washingtons population increased greatly when two brothers moved from St Louis County, Missouri., bringing with them farming techniques they had learned while working on their father's farm near Lindsborg.(9)(10) One brother later married into one of America's most powerful families: The Kennedys were residents of Newtonia until they MOVED TO DALLAS IN 1978). After World War II endedWashinton experienced significant economic decline due largely to Farm crisis; however recent growth has resulted in several high-profile businesses including Apple Incorporated (the first American company ever incorporated outside OFA), Mastercard Incorporated (the world's largest issuer card software), Boeing Co., Microsoft Corporation (home builder since 1975), Amazon Web Services LLC (largest cloud computing provider), Monsanto Company(maker of Roundup herbicide/tillage products)--and many more small businesses making up downtown’s core “face” today."

The town slowly began to decline during the 1850s as transportation improvements made it easier for goods to move around Jackson County. By 1860, Washington had only 10 residents remaining and by 1870 it was all but abandoned. However, because of its location on one of the main trade routes between St. Louis and Hannibal, Washington remains an important symbol of Missouri history and culture today
