In 1839, a group of men from the town of Harper's Ferry, Virginia, began to make small rifles using parts they had acquired during the war with Mexico. They named their new firearms "harper's hats" and began selling them to farmers and hunters in Missouri. By 1845, Harper's Ferry had become a popular stopping-point on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves. The hat company continued to be operated by these original founders until 1865 when it was sold to John Brown & Company. The hat company continued production until 1907 when it was discontinued due to declining sales. In that year, the hat company was donated to the Missouri Historical Society and is now on display at the society's library in Jefferson City.

Firearms eventually spread throughout the world and proved themselves to be incredibly effective at waging war- both against other groups of people as well as each other!

After the war, Washington reverted to its original name but lost much of its commercial importance. In 1930, it became a city again after being amalgamated with Missouri City.
