Washington is a town in Benton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first white settler in Washington was James McDonnell who erected a cabin on the banks of the White River in 1819. The community grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources such as lumber and coal. One of the early pioneers in Washington was John McLaughlin who arrived with his family in 1827 from Kentucky. He built a log cabin on land he purchased from Major General Nathaniel Banks near what is now Overton Park Boulevard and I-64 north of downtown St. Louis. In 1830, Washington also became home to one of the most important churches in Missouri - First Presbyterian Church which served as the church for all residents of Benton County until it moved to Independence in 1897. In 1840, following an act by Governor Thomas Ford that allowed slaveholders to purchase slaves within their own state, many freedmen settled in Washington and surrounding areas including Overton Park Blvd., which today remains one of the most vibrant black neighborhoods outside Harlem, New York City! The post office at Washington was established on July 4, 1839 ( alongside other towns ) by order of Territorial Governor Daniel Boone . It remained open until December 5th 1870 when it closed because so much mail had been sent to St Josephs Depot where goods were then shipped directly to Kansas City for delivery! “It has long been believed that Mr Lincoln’s assassination may have had something to do with this depot closure; however there is no concrete evidence linking any specific event or individuals with this matter” – Jeffery Lichtman

Washington is a town in Clarke County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It was founded by colonists in 1836 and named for General James K. Polk of the United States Army. Washington is located on the Canadian River about 16 miles (26 km) north of Rolla and 21 miles (31 km) south of Springfield. The first permanent settler in what would become Washington was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1799 from Portsmouth, England as part of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. Smith's home still stands today within walking distance of the town square. In 1800, Captains Ensign Daniel Boone and Major General James Wilkinson settled near what would become Washington Village on the Canadian Riverbank just east of present-day Rolla. That same year hostilities began between Great Britain and France over control of what is now Illinois Territory; British forces burned down French settlement at Monticello in retaliation for this action by France. In 1836, General James K Polk sailed his flagship USS Constitution upriver to St Louis to be given command of that port's military forces during Jefferson Davis' term as President of America following the Mexican–American War waged by Mexico against Spain—an event which left many Americans with questions about their government's future post-war course when it seemed American Armed Forces might be called into service again outside its traditional borders Davis had expressed interest in seeing a resident military commander stationed permanently in St Louis since before he became president When news arrived back ashore that Polk's ship had sunk off Missouri shores after being hit by German torpedoes while ferrying supplies upriver from Cairo, Missouri on July 9th 1836 some residents decided to move their families inland After much discussion among local officials regarding land boundaries resulting from this epic disaster most residents chose to settle around what would become downtown St Louis along with some remaining homes along parts of I-70 which currently form part of Platte City Township
