In 1821, the United States of America was founded. The area that is now Washington, Missouri was part of Mexico and was under Spanish rule. In 1825, the United States acquired Texas from Spain as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As a result of this treaty, Washington, Missouri became part of the United States. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General Winfield Scott defeated Mexico in what is known as the Battle for Chapultepec Hill. This event helped to make Mexico an American protectorate and also increased U.S. support for the war effort against Mexico. In 1861, following Confederate secession from the United States, Kansas seceded from Missouri and joined the Confederate government. As a result, all but six counties in western Missouri were within Union Territory when war began on April 6th 1861. The remaining seven counties were within Confederate territory at first but eventually switched sides and joined Union forces later that year. At first glance it might seem strange that binoculars would play such a critical role in warfare during this time period because they are not considered “weapons” by most people today; however, binoculars played an important role in battlefield observation because they allowed commanders to see farther than anyone else and could clearly identify objects up close (even if they were not visible through other means). Washington, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 26,851 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-largest city in the state and its largest municipality by population. It is also a port for trade with adjacent Arkansas and Illinois. The name "Washington" comes from Fort Washington on theMissouri River, which was built by Colonel Robert Ewing as part of an effort to protect St. Louis from attack during the Mexican War (1846-48). The fort served as a military post until 1853, when it was turned into a pleasure resort known as Fort Washington Park. In 1857, General Order No. 8 ordered all FtWashington buildings to be demolished and replaced with new stone barracks for Army troops stationed there; this order remains one of America's most famous landmarks. In 1865, after Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed in 1865 while running for re-election as president against Democrat Andrew Johnson, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided that he too would run for office in Missouri; he entered Stilwell's camp at Olive Branch outside Topeka and offered his services to lead an army expedition against Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth (later Sir John Rees) should Johnson be elected President again on November 5th instead of Lincoln. On December 12th 1865 at 4 PM local time (the day after Lincoln had been shot), Ewell arrived at Springfield Armory with his force and made his way within gunshot range of Ford’s Theater where Abraham Lincoln was attending a performance of “Hallelujah!” before being assassinated; he then advanced towards Union General George McClellan who had taken command nearby at Springfield Armory just minutes earlier following Lincoln’s death. Just before reaching him, however, Ewell pulled away quickly northward back across Kansas border into Indian Territory rather than become involved in what could have been another bloody conflict inside America’s Northwestern territory – only this time around Confederates may not have got away cleanly with their blood shed while American soldiers paid dearly both metaphorically and literally…. For over 60 years afterwards there has been much speculation about whose hand actually held that revolver on Dealey Plaza….. According to some accounts GIs were ordered not to fire if they saw Booth coming because shots might have killed or wounded him even if he had missed…… What we know today about that fateful night does not quite fit neatly into one story nor dispel another….. Washington was first settled by the Cheyenne and Arapaho in 1803. The town was founded on a hill on the east side of the Missouri River, about where present-day Kansas City is located. In 1838, when Texas became a part of the United States, Washington became an official port of entry for goods brought into Texas. It remained an important trading center until after World War II. In 1861, when Confederate soldiers burned down Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Washingtonians rallied to support their northern neighbor. The following year, they helped organize and lead a successful expedition against General John Custer's column at the Battle of Little Bighorn. By 1865, Washington had become one of the most populous towns in Missouri. The town's growth slowed during Reconstruction; however, it continued to grow slowly afterward as businesses moved out and residents lost access to education and other basic services. However, by 1990 Washington had regained some of its former prominence as a commercial center with heavy industry and recent construction projects making it again one of Mo.'s most vibrant cities.
The first white people to set foot on the Missouri River were two men, David Whitfield and Nicholas St. Clair, who traveled in a boat from Illinois in 1803. The settlement that developed along the river was named Whitfieldville after these pioneers. The first permanent settler in Washington, Missouri was James Fenton, who arrived in 1837. He built a cabin on the banks of the Missouri River and began trading with Native Americans. Fenton also became involved in politics and served as a delegate to the state constitutional convention of 1840. In 1841, he married three-timewidower Sarah Bogue and founded Capitol City Female College in Washington, MO.
