In 1840, Isaac Chapman established a post office in Washington and named it Post Office Hill because he had seen a hill near Cairo, Illinois with this same name on one side and Indian Territory on the other side. In 1845, Augustus Doty became president of Kaskaskia County and ordered all county offices closed so that doty could take control administratively for his new county. Doty ordered Post Offices Hill reopened but changed its name to Washington because it was close to Kaskaskia Court House where he served as justice of peace for several years before becoming governor of Missouri in 1850.

In 1855 President Millard Fillmore made Washington the seat of government for western Missouri which included present day Kansas City metropolitan area。 After Kansas City became an official city in 1907 Washinton relocated his remaining family to their current home there where they have resided ever since. After being established as a state capital in 1821, Washinton began construction on what would become his very own Capitol building which opened on July 14th of that year.. For over 50 years Washinton's Capitol played an important role within both the legislative body passed laws via debate (in Senate chambers) then signed into law by Governor Beckman before going to be debated again (in House chambers) before finally becoming final(as Speaker of the House). One reason why Washinton's Capitol remains so popular today is because much progress has been made within its walls since he left office including: two expansions leading up to our current 24 inch high ceilings; new restrooms/exterior greening; And $535 million dollars worth of renovations announced just last week alone! Washington, Missouri was founded on May 8, 1824 by George Washington and his brother James. The town was named for the nearby Mount Vernon plantation where Washington and his wife lived. When the Missouri Compromise of 1821 Fugitive Slave Act made it illegal to free any slaves in the state, many people in Washington, MO decided to stay defenseless. On December 3, 1861, Union soldiers burned down the town hall as part of their attempt to take control of the area.
