In 1846, Washington had a schoolhouse, storehouse and six homes; this number increased to twenty by 1850 when three churches were built: First Presbyterian (1850), Methodist Episcopal (1851) and Baptist (1853). MrsEO Haines donated land for a public square adjacent to her home on Main Street; this square later became known as Haines Park after her donation. In 1861, Elisha Gray organized an expedition led by Captain John Jumper into Fishing River Valley for prospecting purposes only – he never returned.; however his party left behind artifacts including pottery sherds from an early Mississippian culture site at Cartersville named Pigeon Point which has been dated back 9500 years! In 1870 United States v Adams established federal jurisdiction over much of western Missouri beyond Jackson County line although no such jurisdiction existed prior thereto.; this event also marked the first time that General Order No #1 was issued by President Abraham Lincoln!. On July 1st 1870 representatives from St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church located near Grand Junction east of I-270 met with representatives from Trinity Lutheran church located west of I-270 to discuss joint services; this event is also commonly referred to as "First Vatican Council" because it occurred within three months following papal approbation for religious services being offered jointly between these two denominations! Bishop Charles Beisner officiated at this meeting which led ultimately to formation ofthe Cathedral Basilica diocese encompassing all but one county in southern Missouri comprising thennorthern Arkansas border!: This cathedral would become one ofStLouis' most iconic landmarks with completion/dedication taking place exactly fifty years later during Pope Benedict XVI's visit! Washington experienced explosive growth beginning around 1900 due largelyto heavy industry along I-270 – industrial growth spanned more than twelve decades until automobiles began dominating local society!! However even during slower times economic development has continued through creation/establishment/ promotionof numerous small businesses throughout downtownWashington !!
