The area has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years, and the first guns were used against animals in the early days of the state. Because of this, ammunition from all over Missouri was brought to Washington for use in local battles. The town of Washington was founded by J.D. Caldwell in 1836 as a trading post on the banks of the Kansas River. Ammunition from Illinois and other states was brought here to be sold to civilians and military leaders alike. The town grew quickly due to its location and became known as one of the most important commercial areas in Missouri during the antebellum period. Many different companies operated businesses in Washington throughout its history: Armoury & Flour Mill, Creamsbury Arsenal, Pottersville Arsenal, Farmers Arms Armory, Union Armory #2 etc. The city started seeing an influx of immigrants during the 1840s thanks to successful cotton ginning operations run by Dutchmen and others who came west to make their fortune. This new population led to an increase in gun traffic withinWashingtonandthe expanded market for artillery ammunition made it necessary for new companies like Armoury & Flour Millto open up shop there as well. The city also saw growth thanks to Methodist Episcopal Church’s construction of a large school complex that stands today as one of downtownWashington’s most iconic landmarks. In 1868-69[1], Winchester Repeating Arms Company built a small factory on what is now First National Bank premises at Ninth Street and State Avenue Southwest near whereMethodistChurchnowstandsthatwasoncea thrivingcommercialsectionofWashingtonduringthe19thcentury.[2]Winchester gradually merged with Remington Arms Company[3] until both companies were taken over by Colt Firearms Manufacturing Companyin1899.[4] Colt then began producing firearms under its own name until World War II when it too was taken over by Ford Motor Company[5]. It is interesting to note that while many different firms operated within Washington throughout its history,[6][7] only two actually remain active still today: Armoury & Flour Mill (which operate out of downtownWashington) and Winchester Repeating Arms Company (which remains headquartered on 9th Street SW). In 1901, a new rifle calibre was made in Washington, MO; it became known as the Winchester 94 calibre. This calibre is now used for hunting and target shooting.
Washington, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of western Missouri. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a trading post on the east bank of the Verdigris River near present-day Washington, MO. The first settler in what became Washington was Drury Hargrave and his family in 1825. In 1830, John Chouteau bought land from Drury and founded Chouteau County. By 1840, Washington had become an incorporated village with a school and meeting house. Washington experienced rapid growth during its early years; by 1855 it had a newspaper, two churches (the first Episcopal), three stores, one hotel/motel, four blacksmiths, six farmers who raised corn and hay for marketplaces around town, twelve millhands working on riverboats which brought flour to town each day from eastern Illinois and other states northwest of Missouri City (now Kansas City), and thirty-five laborers engaged in various trades orurlings through the village into surrounding counties: all this at an annual cost of $5 per capita to taxpayers. A new railroad was built through Washington in 1857 linking Stilwell Springs with Cape Girardeau overland route via Independence Rock crossing the Arkansas River below Mount Hope Caverns on high ground overlooking downtown Stilwell Springs for passengers then continued via stagecoach routes to Independence Rock for connections with other railroads northward across Iowa Territory into Kansas Territory before reaching Omaha Nebraska Territory where they were transshipped by steamer across Lake Erie to Chicago Illinois before reaching their destination towns or villages—justly famous as "railroad towns"—in record time! With rapidly increasing production along transportation corridors such as this one Washington saw explosive growth that outpaced even nearby Cape Girardeau which only reached 1 percent annual population growth rate between 1850 and 1870 while Washington's population tripled from 10 thousand residents in 1850 to 30 thousand by 1870! Migration increased as well; by 1880 there were more than fifty families living permanently in Washington including twenty-five women and ten men of European descent who worked outside the home raising crops or doing odd jobs until opportunities opened up within larger cities such as Springfield providing better paychecks stability lives away from children during hard times while still having access to education? The popularity of rail travel not just aided productivity but also exposed people directly to new cultures making sense of life changing events happening hundreds miles away through newspapers satellite TV etc.—a process we take for granted today but back then seemed like something quite different! By 1900 there were over seventy families living permanently here including thirty-five women and fifteen men who worked outside the home raising crops or doing odd jobs until opportunities opened up within larger cities such as Springfield providing better paychecks stability lives away from children during hard times while still having access to education? As mentioned earlier Washingtons economy was based largely on agriculture supplemented by manufacturing but when oil discoveries came about capping gas prices workers lost their jobs leaving little money available for subsistence farming businesses let alone investments needed for future economic development so declined instead becoming bedroom communities surrounded by industry again formerly supporting local schools creating dual economies often compromising social cohesion essential for healthy societies? By 2000 most residents no longer commute any further than Kountze Hills 15 minutes eastward where they have some retail shops if needed but no services either except limited health care which can be costly compared to large city equivalents

Washington was a small town in Missouri for over 100 years. It is now a ghost town, However, it has left an interesting and rich history that can be found nowhere else in the United States. Washington began as a Methodist church in 1847. The first black person to live in Washington was John A. Goode, who arrived in 1848. He worked as a day laborer on the farm of Dr. J Fenton until he moved to Washington and started school with his sister Terrencea Hinton. Goode was the first African American to be admitted to Western Reserve University where he studied law and served as the first African American professor at Washburn University from 1951-1957 before moving back to Missouri and dying there in 1962. In 1855, when slavery was abolished across America, Washington became part of Kansas Territory which opened up for white settlers. In 1861, Union General Ulysses S Grant Carney took command of Union forces stationed at Fort Leavenworth and marched into Kansas Territory without warning the residents of Washington which caused great alarm among the villagers who had nothing to lose by joining forces with Grant against their own government. On October 15th 1861, after days of skirmishing and marching through rural areas near present day Springfield, Missouri Governor James Kossuth ordered General Carney's withdrawal due to lack of supplies and support from central authorities. Washington remained isolated during this time as no one knew what would happen next On December 5th 1861 local officials petitioned for federal protection from Confederate reinforcements under Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest that had just crossed the state line into Missouri from Arkansas On December 14th 1861General Carney notified all citizens of Washington that they were free to leave or stay but no one left After three days of deliberations Federal troops entered the town unannounced on Christmas Day 1861 killing most everything within sight including many women and children . Aftermath many people believe that General Carney deliberately withdrew because he didn't want any more blood spilled on his home turf .
