The Warrensburg Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1871, the first rifle and pistol club in the area. The club enjoyed a long history until it disbanded in 1951. At its peak, the club had over 100 members. In 1850, a man named John J. Smith purchased land at what is now corner of Main and Elm Streets in Warrensburg and built a home there. The Smiths were among the earliest settlers in the town of Warrensburg. In 1871, John J. Smith's son-in-law, James Schieffer, bought some additional land around where Main Street currently stands and started to build a house on it. In 1872, James Schieffer married Anna Wagoner (daughter of Abram Wagoner), who was then living with her family at what is now corner of First street and Elm Street in Warrensburg. At this time, the community consisted mostly of farmers with few residents or businesses other than their homes and shops located near the river. The early settlement was based on agriculture because most residents could only afford to purchase subsistence food that they grew themselves from their crops or raised pigs or chickens for their own purposes. In 1901, when the town of Warrensburg incorporated as a municipality, it decided to name its streets after local citizens who had made an important contribution toWarrensburg's growth during its early years: Drury Lumber Company President Hiram Purdy; Illinois Railroad Company Vice President Austin Meeks; Attorney General William Brougham; Judge Auguste Weininger; Mrs. Hiram Purdy; Mr. Augustus Weininger (father-in-law of Mr./Mrs.—Hiram Purdy). Warrensburg, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of southern Missouri. The population was 5,025 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Warren County and the largest city in Warren County by population. The first settler in what would become Warrensburg was James Hultgren, who arrived in 1837. He named his land "Hultgren's Purchase." By 1840, there were four families living here: Hultgren, Goodrich, Wills and Ladd. They started a store on Main Street and built a log cabin that still stands today as the Learning Annex Schoolhouse. In 1851, they voted to become part of Callaway Township and moved their store to what is now known as Central Avenue (now Schoenfeld Road). In 1870-71, Nelson Capps surveyed land for a post office which he named "Cappsville". The town began to grow rapidly when mail came through it from Callaway Township on horseback. A school was built in 1872 andnamed the Union School House after Congressman John A. Logan of Callaway Township who helped build it. In 1876-77 Captain John Smedley erected an Australian gum tree at Market Square which served as our first courthouse square – it can still be seen today! In 1880-81 Major George Fenton donated land to form Cemetery Hill which became home to our first church (the Baptist Church) in 1886-87; we also erected our first jail cell – but it burned down in 1904! In 1898-99 three brothers - Hiram Bogan (1898), Charles Tatum (1900) and Amos Webber - founded The Gilded Cage restaurant here which later became known as Darden’s Inn on Main Street where President Harry Truman stayed during World War II. Our downtown skyline began its present form when Jerald Pfeffer added two stories to his house at 501 N Main Street – this building now houses The Community Bank & Trust Company followed by anchor tenant First National Bank before being demolished in 2009 due to poor condition! In 1907-08 two families - Ahlquist & Larson - donated land east of Center Square for a new high school called Booker T Washington High School; it opened with classes starting September 1st 1915 under Mr. Price’s guidance; however due to financial difficulties within a few years it closed again luring students away with promises of new construction onlyTo reopen under current ownership less than one year later; currently serving grades 9 thru 12 !!! This success story continued until 1993 when Booker T Washington Intermediate Unit No 2 closed following manyandals including arsonism !"
Warrensburg is a town in Lee County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,869 at the 2010 census. It lies along the banks of the Kiel River. The first settler in Warrensburg was James A. Post on November 3, 1837. He and his family had come from Kentucky to open a farm near present-day Springfield, Missouri. The Post family built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Post's Landing". The first store in Warrensburg was opened by Joshua Cravath on December 24, 1839; it was known as the "Cravath Store". In 1840, Wm Haines established a sawmill around which grew the town's commercial district that still exists today. The first post office in Warrensburg was established on October 25, 1840; it was called "Haines'. A year later, John Pritchard opened a store on Second Street just north ofpresent-day Market Square. Pritchard became one of Warrensburg's most prominent citizens and served as its mayor from 1861 to 1865 and again from 1879 to 1880. In 1868 he donated land for the present day University of Missouri campus which now occupies much of downtown Warrensburg
