Warrensburg is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in Warrensburg was made on the banks of the James River by John Dickey and his family in 1836. In 1847, Isaac McCoy and his brother-in-law, James Wirtz settled in what is now Warrensburg. A post office called Harrison was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community of Warrensburg began to develop around a Methodist church built in 1854. The first store opened there on May 15, 1855. It was run by J.W. Brooke and Henery McMillin from nearby Stonington. In 1870 the Mississippi River flood destroyed most of the buildings within town limits; however, some construction continued as a result of donations from settlers who rebuilt or relocated themselves within town limits over the next few years. The first school district formed at Warrensburg included portions of Johnson County; however, when that district became extinct in 1902 it became part of the Jackson County School District which still operates today A courthouse was built near what is now downtown Warrensburg by Ulysses S Grant during his time as Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library Director The first post office at Warrensburg closed on October 26th 1909 due to lack of mail service between Prairie du Chien and Dallas In 1912 an express train ran through town stopping only at local stations before continuing its journey northwards On November 3rd 1913 a tornado touched down just outside city limits destroying much property including churches and residences
