Warrensburg, Missouri is home to the oldest rifle stock company in the United States. The company was started in 1851 by George Armstrong Custer, who was then a scout for General Andrew Jackson’s army. The Warrensburg Rifle Company operated out of a small store on Main Street until it moved to its current location in 1881. The rifle company played an important role during the American Civil War, supplying arms to both Union and Confederate soldiers. In 1865, the rifle company merged with another local gun company to form the Union Rifle and Gun Company. The Union Rifle and Gun Company continued operations until 1880 when it disbanded due to financial problems. In 1863, after Abraham Lincoln became president of America, he issued an order calling for all citizens to arm themselves with firearms in order to protect themselves from potential secessionist sympathizers within their borders. This order resulted in much violence across America as people scrambledto find enough firearms not only for themselves but also for their families members back home. As a result, many small businesses such as John Ferguson & Sons Store closed their doors due to lack of customer demand for handguns (which had become available again following Lincoln’s proclamation). Warrensburg, Missouri is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Warrensburg was Solomon P. Weare who arrived in 1853. Weare built a cabin on what is now Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard and named it after his brother-in-law, General Ulysses S. Grant (1824-93). A post office called Warrensburg was established in 1854, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1859, the Kansa Indian Wars began and many settlers fled to Kansas City because of the hostilities; however, many Warrensburg residents decided to stay and fight for their countrymen. In 1861, General James Hennepin attacked Fort Harrison on the western bank of the Arkansas River just south of present day Lawrenceville while supplies were being unloaded from ships anchored offshore forthe Union army under General George Buell (). The Confederate forces led by Captain John Millington surrendered at this location without resistance due to lack of food or water availability for their troops (). Many local residents including some who had fought at Fort Harrison also surrendered or were captured by Confederate forces during this engagement. In 1865, Lieutenant Colonel Joel Chandler defeated Confederate forces near present day Springfield when they attempted to cross the Little River east of town. Aftermath of the Civil War saw an influx of new settlers into Warrensburg which continued until 1890 when all but 2% of its population died from natural causes according to US Census reports. In 1870 there were 581 people living in Warrensburg; by 1910 that number had grown to 1,971 people with 315 Main Street experiencing some degree of commercial activity. By 1990 only 106 people still lived there making it one of the smallest towns within St Francois County with over one thousand residents.
