After the war ended in 1865, Confederate forces began moving out of Missouri into other states; however, they continued to hold onto parts of central Missouri until 1870 when they finally departed altogether. Warrensburg is a small town located in Randolph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 571 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settlers in Warrensburg were John and Anna Kapp who arrived in 1836. They were followed by their three children, Jacob, Rebecca and Anna. In 1840, David Witherspoon came to the area from Kentucky with his family and began trading goods with the Indians. By 1845, there were 10 families living in Warrensburg and farming land around the creek that ran through it. A Methodist Church was organized in 1846 and school was started in that year also. The first post office opened on October 6th of that year (1847). By 1850, there were 12 families living here and agriculture became an important factor as well as commerce becauseof its close access to local rivers for irrigation purposes. In 1870, a store was built on Main Street which became one of the most successful businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1975 due to financial losses caused by fluctuating oil prices. Other businesses that have been located here over time include: a restaurant (now closed), two bars/liquor stores (both now closed), several shops/stores including one now home to a hair salon/ beauty parlor (closed circa 1990), four churches including two mainline denominations - Baptist & Methodist - as well as smaller sects such as Jehovah's Witnesses & Mormons; 300 homes; nine schools - six public schools & three private schools; two hospitals; numerous churches’ services offered each week (& many more offered outside of business hours); fourteen miles of zip line trails connecting various points within the city limits; five golf courses within easy reach; eighteen miles of major airports - all making this an incredibly diverse community with some 7500 residents having resided here since at least 1800! Warrensburg, MO was first settled in 1821 and is currently a census-designated place. The town was named after General James Warren who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In 1857, the Missouri legislature approved the creation of a new county in western Missouri which would include Warrensburg. The county was named for General Ulysses S. Grant who had played an important role in the American Civil War.
