Warrensburg was founded in 1821 by Captain John C. Fremont and his wife, Nancie. The town was originally named "Canon City." In 1836, the name was changed to Warrensburg after General Ulysses S. Grant became a Senator from Illinois. The city limits were expanded in 1851 and again in 1865 when the Missouri Compromise was passed which increased the population of the city by 10%. The population grew to 100,000 by 1920 and 150,000 by 1930. During World War II, Warrensburg produced 3% of America's food output and 5% of its GDP. It is now a small community with a population of about 20 people. The history of Warrensburg can be traced back to 1821 when Captain John C. Fremont and his wife, Nancie arrived in Missouri from New York City on horseback following their return from an expedition against Mexican resistance forces at San Juan Bautista de Texas (present-day Monterrey). They established themselves near what is now known as downtown Warrensburg on October 7th,1821 as part of the effort to establish new settlements throughout present day Missouri. In 1840, Commodore Gideon Welles decided that he would build an arsenal at Fort Donelson on the Mississippi River due to fears that Mexico would attack United States soil should war break out with Spain over control of Louisiana (then part of France). He ordered Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter to build two forts: one at Cairo and one at Quincy – both near where today’s I-55 crosses Arkansas River just south of Carthage Park Cemetery; these forts were intended as coastal batteries capable of repelling any potential Mexican incursion into US territory should war erupt with Spain over Louisiana or Texas (the future Mexico). Commodore Welles also built a warehouse and store house on Main Street in downtown Warrenburg while he awaited completion of his arsenal; this building still stands today within walking distance from the current Post Office building located just east side Railroad Avenue across Railroad Yard from where I-55 currently exits onto Highway 362 about 1/4 mile north east OF Hannibal Road (just northwest corner Of Old Capitol Square). Captain Fremont & Mrs Fremont erected their log cabin next door (& adjacent to present day Arsenal Building) Oct 7 1861 @ 11 PM est…. rule 2nd floor only… no bedroom but “comfortable single bed” separate bath tub & shower room…. good living conditions for pioneer family….. later families moved up high stories during ensuing decades

The downtown area has been restored to its early 19th century appearance with brick buildings lining Main Street . There are also several parks located within walking or biking distance of various parts of town including Battlefield Park (site of two skirmishes between Native Americans and white settlers), Southern Illinois University– Carbondale Campus Historic District (home to one of America's first university colleges), Mustang Recreation Area (a popular spot for inline skating), Stout Park (home to baseball games) and First National Bank Building (former home of Missouri State Highway Patrol).
Warrensburg was founded in 1836 by John Neely Bryan. It became a city in 1868, and was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The city's first mayor was James K. Polk.
