Warrensburg is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in Warrensburg was Levi Coffin in 1837. The town was named after General John C. Fremont, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as U.S. Senator from California. In 1847, James Kossuth established a school at Warrensburg for Native American children and he purchased land east of the village to build a general store and other buildings. In 1863, General Samuel Jourdan's division of cavalry attacked and destroyed an Indian encampment near Grant's Mill on the River Arkansas north of Warrensburg; this event became known as the Battle of Sioux Lookout (the name for what is now southwestern Missouri). In 1870, two brothers by the name of Barnes bought 640 acres (2 km²) west of present-day Warrensburg from Jourdan's veterans for $10 per acre ($204 total), creating what would become Barnes County. By 1880, when it was reported that banks were offering rates up to $50 per mile (€25 per km²), many farmers in central Johnson County had decided to move their operations into eastern Johnson County because they found more fertile ground there than in western Johnson County where crop prices were high but wages were low due to lack of professional expertise in farming techniques then available to farmers." In 1886–87, local businessmen organized a wheatgrowers' association which created marketing opportunities for local crops such as flour and feed grains not possible before with only wagon transportation available between warehouses located throughout central Missouri." The post office at Warrensburg opened on March 14, 1888; it changed its name to Kansas City on October 15 that year."

In 1870, the Warrensburg Railway was built, and the town became increasingly connected with the larger city of Springfield. By 1907, Warrensburg had become a small agricultural community with a population of only 100 people. However, during World War I the town experienced significant growth as soldiers arrived in search of work. By 1918, Warrensburg had reached its peak population and had established itself as an important military center. However, during the 1920s and 1930s there were several economic setbacks that led to declining population and economicactivity. In 1939,Warrensburg merged with neighboring towns to form Rockville Township.
