The town has been a center of trade and industry for many years, with two sawmills and four factories making products such as clothing, shoes, paper and plastics. In recent years, however, the industries have disappeared and unemployment rates have increased in Warrensburg. The primary economic activities now are agriculture and local services like accounting and law enforcement. The town was named after General James K. Polk who served as President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War from 1876 to 1879. He donated $5 million to help build what is now known as Central High School in Warrensburg in 1881; it replaced an earlier school that had burned down in 1870s. The building still stands today and is used as a museum today!

Warrensburg is a town in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,792 at the 2010 census. The first post office was established in Warrensburg on February 14, 1821. The present town was laid out in 1868 by John M. Wigglesworth and named after General Andrew Johnson. Warrensburg has been the seat of Buchanan County since its creation. The area that now Warrensburg was first populated by the Shawnees and Caddo Indians. In 1788, James Ketchum founded Ketchum City on what is now the northeast corner of Buchanan County and Randolph County, Kansas Territory. Ketchum City became a major trading center for settlers along the Santa Fe Trail and other east-west trails connecting Missouri to Texas. A small community called Osborneville developed near Ketchum City about 1830; it reverted to Shawnee control about 1840 when Indian traders abandoned it because of American expansion into Kansas Territory. In 1821, John M. Wigglesworth organized the first post office in Warrensburg; he named it after General Andrew Johnson, who had served as Ulysses S Grant's Secretary of War during the Civil War (1865-1869). When Buchanan County was organized on April 30, 1867 from part of Randolph County, Kansas Territory, Wigglesworth appointed George Bancroft as its first sheriff and clerk/treasurer. On July 16th of that year also occurred an important event in local history: Wigglesworth erected a log courthouse at what is now Main Street and US Route 65 south of town; this building remained standing until 1951 when it was replaced by a more recent structure which can still be seen today on Main Street between US Route 65 and US Route 40 (now State Highway 5). That same year also saw another important development in local history: William Fenton purchased 640 acres within present-day downtown Warrensburg from Jesse Hinton for $1 million dollars – this land would later become home to both University Park Shopping Center and several apartment buildings currently known as "Fenton Place". In 1865 Union soldiers under Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Dyer burned down three huts used by Confederate sympathizers situated atop high hills overlooking eastern Buchanan County while retreating from McClellan's army during the Battle of Wilson's Creek; these events helped spurramerthe construction of nearby Fort Sumter began one week later that month soon followed by enthusiastic celebrations throughout much of Missouri including large crowds gathering at various plantations aroundtown where goods brought back with troops represented perhaps half or more of all taxable value reported that year statewide! As early as 1870 average daily sales values reported statewide reached over $2 per capita! A numberous businesses quickly sprang up aroundtown following service academies located nearby like West Point Military Academy (opened in 1871), Stroud Military Academy (opened in 1875),and Drake Naval Naval Air Station ( opened in 1896) all drawing students away from more centrally located schools becoming some Ofallon residents were quick to lament "a new class has come over here", although no evidence exists to support such claims! It should be noted though that many well-to-do citizens did not leave their rural unaffected homes behind but rather invested time & money into economic development enjoying steady increases throughout most if not all years leading up until World War II! However despite these positive developments there were always those who felt suffocated within their small bubbles while others simply took little notice - rarely mentioned outsideof historic contexts certainly never discussed herebelow?
