Warrensburg is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. The town was named for General James Warren and his troops who fought in the American Civil War. The first settlers in Warrensburg were Native Americans who lived near present-day Springfield. A Post Office was established in 1827, and by 1830, the community had a store and two homes. In 1835, a school was built; it continued to be used until 1919. In that year, a railroad station was built on the market square and served as the center of town until 1901 when an depot was erected on State Route 9 north of downtown. In 1856, a Presbyterian church became operational in Warrensburg; it still operates today as First Presbyterian Church (Old). In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant visited Warrensburg and observed how well people were living despite having little access to potable water or transportation; he wrote about this experience in his book "A Narrative of Events during My Service As Commander-in-Chief Of The Union Armies". By 1870, there were also one Methodistchurch (First Methodist), three Baptist churches (Upper Cedar Creek Baptist Association), one Catholic church (Canton Congregation of Mary Immaculate), two black churches (African American Episcopal congregation organized 1886), one Odd Fellows lodge No. 1 (/Fellowship Hall/), three schools - Consolidated School District No. 2 /Warrensburg Academy/ (1896–1901) - Randolph Technical Institute 1904-1911 /Randolph High School 1912-1914/, Illinois Wesleyan College 1916-1920 /Wesleyan University 1921—24/, and two stores - Goudreau's Store #1 1896—1900 #2 1902—2004/, Crouse & Haines Store 1907—2008/. In 1932, Mayor Prentice Dorman announced plans for what would become known as "Dorman's Plaza"; it would include several blocks south of Main Street between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue with commercial space on each side facing Sixth Avenue.. In 1835, the first school in Warrensburg was built. After being closed for several years due to financial problems, the school reopened in 1848. In 1860, the Union army invaded Missouri andWarrensburg sided with the Confederacy. As a result of this decision, many residents lost their jobs and moved away from town. In 1865, Warrensburg surrendered to Confederate forces and remained under military occupation until 1870. The last resident died in 1924.
