The Caldwells were followed by other pioneers, including John P. Hickey and his family in 1840; Isaac Myers in 1845; and Daniel Boone Beeson and his family in 1846. The town of Warrensburg was platted on December 12, 1851, by order of territorial governor John Wickersham. It became part of the newly formed County of Greene on March 14, 1852. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Burnside destroyed much of Springfield with an army attack known as the Battle of Springfield Heights. In retaliation for this attack, Union forces burned down many homes and businesses near downtown Springfield while also arresting thousands of civilians. This event is sometimes called the "Battle of Springfield." A memorial to the victims has been placed at Soldiers' National Cemetery since that time
