Warrensburg is a small town in western Missouri that was settled in 1835. It became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1974. The population of Warrensburg at the 2010 census was 9,732. In 2008, the city council approved an ordinance that requires all gun retailers to have a security guard on site and store employees must be trained in how to handle firearms. Gun violence has been a problem in Warrensburg for many years. In 2002, there were three shootings within two weeks; one shooting occurred while someone was sitting in their car outside of a local gun store. A few years later, there were four shootings within two months; one within 24 hours of another. In 2006, there was an attack on a police officer with a rifle that left him with serious injuries. The city manager put into effect new regulations following the attack; these included requiring customers who wanted to buy firearms to provide identification and proof of insurance before being allowed to do so. The goal of these regulations is to make it more difficult for people who may want to harm or take away from locals their right to bear arms. The first white people to arrive in this area were the Hennepin brothers, who founded what is now Higginsville in 1820. They named their settlement for General James K. Polk, who had just won an important victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Hill on November 8, 1818. The Hennepin brothers also opened a store and tavern there. The first post office was established in 1832, and it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1830, John Gentry built a log cabin on his farm near present-day Uniontown; he later moved to town and became one of its early residents. He donated land for the town's first schoolhouse and cemetery. In 1837, Caleb Warner built a log cabin on his farm near present-day Springfield; he later moved to town and became one of its early residents. He donated land for the town's first hospital and mill village development project. In 1850, Amos Niles settled here after moving from Illinois via wagon train from Nauvoo to Independence Grove east of Springfield as part of Brigham Young's Great Migration Policy initiative; he arrived with his family on July 24, 1850。Niles erected a small frame building on what is now Vine Street that served as the rudimentary courthouse until replaced by what is now Main Street in 1865 (). On February 14, 1861 (), Confederate soldiers under General Robert Ewing burned some stores located adjacent topresent-day Uniontown while deployed along US 65 south of Springfield (); this event led to increased business activity around these stores soon afterward (). This event also led to increased concern within Warrensburg about possible war implications (). On May 12th 1861 (), Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest issued an order allowing all men between 16 and 60 years old across Missouri "to arm against all forms of internal hostility" (the so called "Ferguson Order"). A few months later (November 15th), Forrest announced that Missouri would be seceded from the Confederacy because "the negroes have not yet been taken care of". After much discussion within local communities about how best to respond – including whether or not to open fire upon their Confederate occupiers – no squads or individual citizens took up arms against their Northern counterparts during actual hostilities taking place elsewhere throughout Missouri during THIS TIME period... However resident anti- Confederates did take matters into their own hands by burning numerous supplies stockpiled by Unionists northeast of town prior TO THE Civil War starting."

The first settler in Warrensburg was John Morrison in 1837. The town was platted in 1839 and named for Major General James K. It was one of twelve towns created from parts of St. Louis Township on November 3, 1840 by an act of the Territorial Legislature pursuant to the Kansas-Nebraska Act. At its peak, Warrensburg had a population over 2,000 people and included churches and schools as well as numerous businesses including mercantile stores and farmssteads along portions of what is now I-70. When prohibition finally arrived in America in 1920 through raids conducted by Ulysses S Grant's Department Of Justice after organized crime had become rampant following repeal of Prohibition via state legislation known as "the Volstead Act", many residents decided to leave for other states or Canada where drinking alcohol still wasn't considered Illegal under Ulysses S Grant's rule despite widespread belief it would eventually be so everywhere within American borders regardless of law enforcement efforts theretofore notwithstanding even thoughdry laws were currently enforced primarily within territorial limits defined by congressional delegation headquartered in Topeka thereby excluding Clay County entirely from this legal process rendering much smaller than average percentageportionofClayCounty inhabitantsactuallyutilizinglawenforcementresourcesratherthan abandoning their homes & properties rather than comply with unconstitutional & illegal government order
