Bacon also donated land to the town specifically for a public square which is still present today (Fenton Square). In 1868, Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived in Warrensburg with his group of Confederate troopers seeking refuge from Union forces occupying Tennessee. Aftermath of the Battle of Fort Donelson led to Forrest's capture and incarceration at Fort Pickens near Jacksonville, Florida; however he later escaped from prison and returned toWarrensburg where he took up arms againstthe Union again two years later (1870). During World War II much activity took place at Fenton's armory including production of mace projectiles for artillery use as well as ammunition for planes flown over Europe After the war ended General James Muckle opened what is now known as "Muckleshoot" restaurant on Main Street which served food until 1959 In 1951 Johnnie Raye started work at Muckleshoot Restaurant becoming its first employee By 1955 all but one shot fired Ammunition Plant had been closed down due to lack of customers

During this time, many new businesses were founded including United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), which operated until 1984 when it merged with Boeing Company; International Paper Company; Wabash Coal Company; Stroud-Avery Hardware; Biochemical Equipment Corporation; Illinois Tool Works Inc.; Peet's Coffee Shop/Bakery;; Barnes-Nixon Tobacco Co.; White Sands Ammunition Plant;; Missouri National Guard Armory;; Saunders Electric Supply Co.; Consolidated Edison Company;; Laughlin Steel & Iron Works Inc.; Northwestern Railway Corporation ;; El Paso County Courthouse; local police department; and many other small businesses that helped contribute to its thriving economy during those times.
Warrensburg, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. It has a population of about 7,500 people and is the home of the University of Central Missouri. The town was founded in 1849 by Major General James K. Polk and his wife, Rachelle. The present-day downtown area was built between 1907 and 1912. The town was named after Captain James K. Polk, who fought during the Mexican-American War as a captain in the 4th Ulysses S. Grant’s regiment. When Kansas became an American state in 1861, Captain Polk became one of its first citizens. He served as justice of the peace for Warrensburg until 1868 when he resigned to become brigadier general at age 43 (the same year that Kansas became a state). In 1865 he married Rachelle Chase, daughter of Senator John Cranch Chase of Ohio—a situation which caused some friction with other elements in the community because she was not born into privilege or wealth like many residents were (Rachelle had been born into poverty). Captain Polk spent much time visiting his family back east before returning to Warrensburg to serve as mayor from 1886 to 1888 and then again from 1893 to 1897; both times he won election with more than 60% of the vote. He also served on several committees including those responsible for building Independence Hall (1893),lections for county government (1897),and creating schools within the local government (1907). Captain Polk died on October 14th, 1899 at age 80 years old due to pneumonia brought about by an operation on his brainstem two weeks earlier while serving as Mayorof Warrensburg
