In 1851 the Union Pacific Railroad reached Warrensburg from Springfield via Fulton Junction; this opened up new business for the town which grew rapidly with its sharecropping and agriculture industries until World War II when manufacturing became dominant and many residents left for other places such as St Louis or Kansas City. In 1951 the old Post Office building located at 5th and Main Streets was razed to make way for a new high school which would become one of America's most influential schools during that era; current dayHigh School Administration Building stands just across Main Street from where the original building once stood (See photo). A major fire destroyed all but one block of downtown Warrensburg on November 3, 1984 after a short bushfire started near byvernmental buildings housing National Guard troops who were being used as part of Operation Neptune's Spear military campaign against Nicaraguan contraband drug smuggling gangs operating out of that country In 1995-1996 another major fire burned down almost all downtown buildings before it was brought under control by firefighters about an hour after it had started
