The first post office in Warrensburg was established on November 3, 1837. The current post office building, built in 1911 and still in use today as a postal center, is also the local history museum for Warrensburg. The townsite of Warrensburg was laid out by John Sutherlin in 1837 and named after General Ulysses S. Grant's birthplace, Grafton County, New York. At the time of its establishment, Warrensburg had no railway connection and relied instead on wagon trains to bring goods to market. By 1860 however, railroads had arrived in the area andWarrensburg soon became one of the leading agricultural communities in Kansas City with over 60 widely diverse businesses including a hotel (the Hotel Roosevelt) which continues to be operational today as an inn/motel; two grain elevators; two banks; twelve schools (six public and six private); four churches (including three Baptist and one Methodist); four residences; two grocery stores; two breweries; one blacksmith shop; one harness store; four doctors' offices (one general practice and three specialists); five hotels including one that still stands as a landmark: The Park Hotel (now known as Emmanuel Place). In 1907-1908 construction began on what would become known as "The Star", Wichita's first skyscraper located on Fourth Street between Main and Market Streets in downtown Wichita Falls. Withstood many challenges during its construction - including numerous fires - "The Star" eventually opened its doors to guests on May 14th 1908 becoming Wichita's tallest building ever at 208 feet (~60 m). During World War I much effort went into raising money for American troops overseas through art auctions which yielded some very valuable items such as Replica Colt revolvers valued at $2 million USD! Prior to World War II most residents produced cornmeal for local consumption or exported it back home for flour prices above $1 per bushel! In 1942 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor doing extensive damage their forces landed at nearby Fort Worth Army Airfield setting off an all out battle against almost 350 USAAF bombers resulting in more than 100 Japanese aircraft destroyed or damaged! As a result of this battle over 400 homes were leveled along with countless other buildings with only about 10% remaining standing ! Today there are few if any remaining structures from that time period within walking distance of any significant fortification!!!
