The first post office was established in 1841. In 1865, the town became a military reservation and in 1904 it became an incorporated city. In 1916, the population of Warrensburg reached 50,000 and it soon grew to over 100,000 during World War II when it became one of the largest cities in Missouri. After the war, Warrensburg experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for St. Louis County until its decline in the 1960s. Today, Warrensburg is a small agricultural community with a few hundred residents. Its history is full of adventure and innovation which has helped make it one of the most vibrant communities on the eastern edge of Missouri.
In 1864, Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army invaded the Confederate state of Missouri. The Confederates fought vigorously back, but eventually were driven out of the state by Grant's troops. In 1865, Missouri became a part of the United States and Warrensburg was renamed to honor Union General Ulysses S. Grant.
