The town was founded by three men named Warren on January 24, 1836, and was named for General James K. Polk of the Union army during the American Civil War. The town grew rapidly after it was platted in 1837 and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1840 the Warrensburg Missionary Baptist Church became the first church in Warrensburg and remains so today. In 1848 an act was passed to create a school district in Johnson County which would include Warrensburg. A new school building was built and classes began on September 12 of that year. The first teacher taught Kindergarten through 8th grade which then transitioned to high school when grades 9-12 were added to the program in 1870). In 1886 $25,000 was raised towards building a new high school which would be located east of town on what is now known as State Route 169 (the old route leading from Topeka to Shawnee). In 1895 $50,000 more was raised and construction began on what would become one of America's most famous high schools – Central High School (later renamed Central University). The Great Depression led to a decline in enrollment at Central High School until World War II when enrollment increased once again due to military recruitments. AfterWorld War II Central High School closed its doors for good in 1962 but has been reborn as Warrensburg Technical Community College with campuses throughout Johnson County since that time including an adult education wing currently serving students from central Jackson County as well!
