The first target holders were a group of six men who pooled their money and bought a lot of targets from a store. They would take turns shooting at the targets, and then trade them off to other members of the group. From there, it was just a matter of taking care of business, as each man had his own way of shooting at targets.
University City, Missouri is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 26,811 at the 2010 census. University City is part of the Springfield-Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up University City was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s as part of what became known as the Illinois Territory. In 1833, President Andrew Johnson ordered US troops to leave and Indian traders began to populate the area. In 1836, a group of Methodist missionaries founded Morningside College in what would become University City. The college grew rapidly and by 1840 had constructed a campus on Whatley Road near today's Market Street intersection. In 1846, Union Army General George Armstrong Custer arrived in town and while he was staying at Morningside College he met then-Mayor John Atherton and decided to move his headquarters from Fort Lyon to University City after hearing about an excellent location for a university near Fentonville Creek which formed its eastern border. In 1870, when St Louis County was created, University City became one of its six townships; it remained so until 1934 when it became one of nineteen cities within St Louis County (along with Ferguson, Independence Heights/St Petersburgh Heights, Clayton Hills/Farmington Hills/Lakewood Village/Dundee Hills/Belleville Hill/Mount Vernon Park). Mayor James Kellar appointed Davenport Hite as director of public instruction for all universities within St Louis County on October 1st 1898; Hite's tenure saw many advances for education in the county including extension work into rural areas and creation of new faculties such as law and medicine etc.; during his term there were also several important riots or disturbances taking place throughout the county caused by citizens upset with high taxes levied against them by local governments etc.). With World War I looming large on the horizon University City made preparations both financially and physically; soon after hostilities ended they began construction on what would become Armour Drive which linked their main campuses together across Whatley Road (now called Florissant Avenue) with laboratories and classrooms being erected along this route.
