However, University City experienced a rapid decline during the Great Depression and World War II. Today, most of University City is located within the boundaries of Ferguson Township. The first two schools in University City were opened in 1855: one by students at Montrose College and another by students at Amherst College. Both schools closed after a few years. The town recovered and grew rapidly until it reached its peak in the 1920s, when it had more than 300,000 residents. In addition to their colleges and universities (which continued to grow), early UniversityCity businesses included several printing presses and J&R Wagon Workshops which manufactured goods for local farmers such as saddles and harnesses; farm tools including hoes & sickles; farm machines such as tractors & milking machines; baking powder; eggs; cigarettes; lumberjacks’ adams appleseed oil mills which processed crude oil from oil wells near campus into finished products such as gasoline - also known as "University Gas" - lubricants - also known as "Munich Lubricant"; Singer Sewing Machines (later acquired by Belknap Press); Chicago Electric Railway carriages used on streets throughout St Louis County until they were replaced by buses in 1922-1925; ice cream parlors serving various flavors beginning around 1915-1916 (the first being Ben’s Candy Parlor on Main Street) Some notable individuals who lived or worked in or around University City during this time include merchant Daniel Webster (1811-1885), insurance agents Auld & Frye (1860-1936), Mayor George Cornish (1875-1938), Grover Cleveland’s Vice Presidential running mate Thomas Minton Barnes (1881-1950), Professor Augustus Woodward Sellars III “Gus” Antoine Carruth(1899-1973) – an important figure in American political history who served twice as Dean of Tulane School Of Law – real estate developers Morris Griggs(banking officer) & Lewis Hogg(real estate developer) – two major stockholders/managers with First National Bankers Trust Company whose operations extended from east side downtown through Park Row into parts unknown today – Julius Rosenwald Jr.(founder/President emeritus/CEO Sears Roebuck & Co.), General Motors Company president Alfred Sloan(1920-) – head football coach Pop Warner 1946-'48-'50-'54-'56.' University City had a population of 509 in 1907, according to the 1920 census. The city was founded in 1881 by J.H. Hill and W.F. Worthington as a small town on the east bank of the Missouri River near its present-day intersection with I-70 and MO-322. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its access to education, businesses, and transportation options. In 1907, University City had a population of 1,050 people. By 1930, University City's population hadgrown to 2,055 people. In 1951, University City became an official city within the St Louis metropolitan area when all of St Louis County became an official county subdivision under the newly created St Louis Metropolitan Authority. The city continued to grow until it reached its current population size of over 2 million people in 2010
