University City, Missouri is a city in the county of St. Francois in the Central Time Zone. The population was 17,500 at the 2010 census. University City is one of the largest cities in Missouri and it straddles both sides of I-55, linking downtown Saint Louis with Midtown and east STL to Kansas City. The history of University City goes back to 1836 when the first students from Transylvania University moved to what is now University City from Lawrence,Kansas due to lack of space on their campus. In 1868, Transylvania merged with SMU and became Southern Methodist University; this merger created a large school district that covered much of central Missouri including parts of St. Francois County as well as most portions of Kansas City metropolitan area. In 1907, a new university building was built on North First Street which served as home for both SMU (then Southern Illinois Normal School) and MU (then Monmouth Uiversity). It was decided that an interdenominational theological seminary should be established in town so Protestant and Catholic students could study together under one roof. This institution became known as Union Theological Seminary and remained open until 1955 when it merged into Southern Illinois Univ.– Carbondale (SIUC). In 1961 SIUC donated its entire land parcel north of High Street – bounded by Elmwood Place east to Vandenberg Road south to Heflin Boulevard west – to MU for use as a research hospital named after former president James Buchanan Barnett III following his death at SIUC medical center while serving as chancellor at UIUC-Carbondale. In 1969 UIUC– Carbondale formed its own independent university system withMU becoming its flagship institution; this system continues today with MU being the only major university located within MO’s borders outside Springfield metropolitan area FSU also has campuses located in Staunton (VA) and Ferguson (TX). University City was founded in 1855 by Peter Cooper and John S. Todd as the University of Missouri at Columbia. The city has since grown to include more than 33,000 residents and is home to many of the University of Missouri’s campus facilities, including the UI College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the School of Dentistry, and the School of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to its academic institutions, University City is also home to a number of popular tourist attractions, such as the Museum of Art and Science, which features important American art from the late 19th century through today; Stonehenge Park; and Royal Albert Hall. The history of University City began with a small group of farmers who set up shop around what is now North Main Street. The first school in town was called “School House No. 1” on this spot from 1855-1857. In 1859 students were brought in by boat from St. Louis for an agricultural experiment known as “The Campus Experiment” conducted by Professor Samuel Morse at Washington College (now Washburn). In 1861 when Union troops moved into Columbia following their victory over Confederate forces at Manassas Junction, they found that much property had been taken over by private individuals for use as part of their plantations or farms outside Columbia proper. One such owner was Peter Cooper Sr., who leased land northward from James Kircher on White Street to form the nucleus for what would become University City. It wasn’t until 1865 that Ulysses S Grant became president after being elected president on a platform supporting centralization within America’s newly created federal government – an idea championed by Cooper Sr.. Two years later in November 1867 Ulysses S Grant issued his executive order creating West Point Military Academy westward along Highway 9A from Boone Landing Road (later renamed I-65) eastward into present day University City. This move signaled an end to Columbia’s status as an educational center independent fromWashington Dental Hospital (later renamed UI Hospitals), one factor that contributed to heavy student enrollment atWest Point during its early years.–Ulysses S Grant himself noted: “I closed Fort Hays [sic] without hiring any teachers…..Columbia can do nothing but sclerosis [sic]….She must become like Washington Dental Hospital if we are to have our share in building up our countrymen hereafter!” One reason why so many students came to UCD during these early days was because there were no other colleges in town with similar programs or infrastructure––a situation that would change dramatically over time as West Point grew larger and more elaborate while UI Hospitals shrunk back behind it onto smaller properties throughout downtown Columbia County……In 1870–71 Drury Lane intersected White Street just southwest of where North Main currently stands……This intersection served two purposes: it served as a junction point for different streetcar lines coming down White Street both going northeast towards Clarksville[Garrison], southwest towards Midway[Kirby], northwest towards Old Main[Langston], southeast towards South Central Library[Moses], southwestwards towards Scott Stadium,[Humphrey], northwestwards towards main street[White]…and finally northwestwards back down White Street again terminating near current day North Main….At this point everyone travelling along WhiteStreet terminated right outside what we now call Drury Lane! 2

University City was founded in 1868 as a small town on the edge of the Great Plains. The original founders were fur traders and army officers who decided to establish a new trading post in what is now University City because they thought it would be an ideal location for research into new mineral resources. After several years of development, University City became a thriving community with its own school, businesses, and churches. In 1923, University City was renamed St. Louis after the city's first mayor, John Fenton St. Louis. Today, University City remains a vibrant community with a rich history and culture that is worth exploring.
