University City, Missouri has a rich rifle history dating back to 1837. The first rifles sold in the city were SpanishMODs, which were made by Nicholas-Jacques Cockerill and his son John Cockerill. In 1853, University City became the home of the first rifle range in Missouri. The range was located on First Street between Garrard and Randolph Streets. In 1865, University City became the home of the first School of Rifle Practice in Missouri. This school operated from 1865-1868. In 1886, University City became the home of the world's first shotgun shop. This shop was located on Second Street between Garrard and Randolph Streets. In 1903, University City became home to one of America's largest rifle ranges - The Western Range on Shelby Road between Garrard and Randolph Streets. The Western Range was open for shooting from April 1 through October 15th each year. From 1904-1906, it also served as headquarters for America's First Infantry Division during World War I (1914-1918).
University City is a small city in Montgomery County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. University City is located about 12 miles (19 km) west of the St. Louis metropolitan area and about 18 miles (29 km) east of Kansas City. The town was founded by men from farmsteads near present-day Independence and Alton on the edge of what is now University City in 1851. The name "University City" first appeared on a deed for land that had been donated to the town by General James Hays in 1892. A post office called University City was established in 1893, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1923, UCC became one of thirty-six colleges and universities within NCAA Division I as part of the newly formed National Collegiate Athletic Association. In 1952, UCC merged with nearby Roycroft College to form Roycroft/UCC Campus Corporation which has continued to operate as an autonomous institution since then. In 1965, UCC became one of thirteen campuses within NCAA Division III as part of the reformation of college athletics under then- presidents George Mason Wright and Wallace Weisburd; this change made UCC one of only six Divisions III institutions that have never been disbanded or absorbed into another division since they were created.[3] On November 1, 2007,[4] President Rick Neumann announced that all but two buildings on campus would be torn down and replaced with a new facility using state-of-the-art technology including an LED lighting system which will make it possible for students to see their professors during class without having to wear glasses or removesunglasses![5][6] The old building will be preserved as part of campus history while the new building will be used for student services such as library access and dormitories; both buildings are scheduled to open in September 2008[7]. Plans call for approximately $25 million over three phases to be invested into renovating all university properties across campus;Phase I is scheduled for completion by 2020,[8][9][10] Phase II should complete by 2024,[11][12] Phase III should finish by 2030[13], making UniversityCity one of only a few American cities -- along with Austin, Texas; Portland Oregon; Vancouver BC Canada; Edinburgh Scotland -- which have fully transitioned from traditional agricultural society into modernized urban areas while still maintaining rural character.[14][15]

University City, Missouri was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and his wife Sarah Dickinson Polk as the University of Missouri. The city was named for the university, which at that time was only a small preparatory school. In 1840, the university became an independent institution and the name changed to Missouri State University. In 1885, it became the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Finally, in 1913, it became flagship campus of the new University System of America and retains this distinction today. The history of University City is long and varied. It began as a small town on the eastern edge of St Louis County on the banks of The Potomac River. The town rapidly grew because it was located near two major transportation hubs: St Louis and Kansas City. A sawmill operated by John Sutter situated in what is now University City helped turn out boards for buildings in early days; today’s Old Main building on Slatkin Avenue was constructed between 1830 and 1836 by James K Polk while he served as governor of Missouri. In 1836, when President James K Polk arrived in St Louis to take up his duties as president of Missouri state university, he found that there were no suitable homes for students or faculty members within city limits! He turned to Governor Sarah Dickinson Polk for help finding a location within city limits where they could build a new campus with excellent facilities for teaching and research – which is exactly what Mrs. Polk did! She donated land east of Market Street on Saline Creek so that MoState could be built without having to worry about traffic congestion or cost overruns associated with traditional public universities at that time! Just one year later, on October 20th1837, MoState opened its doors with just fourteen students! By 1850, however – thanks to increased funding from appropriations from both Mr. Polk and Congress – MoState had grown into oneofthe largest private institutions in America! Today we continue our proud history as one of “America’s Four Top Universities” through initiatives like MOOCs (massive open online courses), STEM (science & technology fields), CrossFit (fitness/workout program) & more!
University City was founded in 1839 by a group of men from Manchester, England. The town was named after the University of Missouri, which was established in 1819. The first college in University City was the Normal School, which opened in 1840. In 1843, the University of Missouri moved to University City and became a state university. The Normal School closed in 1865 and the first university building, called the Old Main Building, opened in 1868. The city became an important center for education during the American Civil War because it was home to both Confederate General Robert E. Lee's headquarters and Union General Ulysses S. Grant's camp on campus. The city also played a role in post-war Reconstruction with many businesses opening up to help rebuild southern cities after the war. The city experienced rapid growth following World War II when new housing projects were built along Interstate 70 and westside Boulevard. During this time, University City become known as one of America's most vibrant downtowns. Many major companies such as GEICO, Monsanto Company, PepsiCo Inc., Microsoft Corporation and Chrysler Group have their headquarters or main operations located within or near University City since its inception as a town more than 150 years ago today."
