The University of Missouri in University City, Mo., is one of the oldest universities in the United States. It was founded by a group of college students in 1839 as The Normal School. In 1848, it became the University of Missouri at Columbia. In 1907, it became the University of Missouri at Urbana-Champaign. In 1916, it merged with the State Teachers' College to become the University of MO (now MU).
University City is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the banks of the Missouri River just east of Columbia. The townsite was laid out by General James K. Polk and named after him after he won the 1876 Ulysses S. Grant–opposed presidential election in which University City participated as one of three villages in Missouri that received electoral votes for Grant despite his opponent's having no living residents within their boundaries. University City developed rapidly through the early 1800s as an agricultural center due to its location upstream from what is now Columbia and its easy access to navigation on the Missouri River. By 1830, University City had a population of 350 people and became an important transportation hub for travelers coming into and leaving Columbia. In 1839, two prominent men from University City donated land to build a school that would serve as a training ground for future federal officials including future President James K. Polk who attended School No. 5 until he was 17 years old before going on to become one of America's first successful political leaders at age 25 when he served as Secretary of War under Andrew Johnson during ReconstructionPlymouth Township trustees purchased title to approximately five miles (8 km) south of where Uniontown now stands from General John Custer during1863-65 over objections from local farmers because they wanted more marketable farmland adjacent to their village limits while Plymouth Township retained ownership over nearly all other properties within its borders northward towards Farmington (now Springfield). In 1871-72, Plymouth Township trustees also donated land totaling between five and six miles (8-10 km) northward along present day I-70 across Raccoon Creek from Farmington so that it would be possible for students studying at nearby Central Missouri State University—the first university established in this state—to disembark here rather than traveling via boat across Raccoon Creek each morning ortraveling several hours by horseback during summer months when water levels were high enough to make travel difficult but not high enough so that boats could not dock). This donation made possible both Central Missouri State University's establishment and later growth as one of the most widely respected research universities in America with programs such as engineering, law, business administration, health care/fertility treatments etc.. University City was founded in 1839 by the Missouri General Assembly as a military post on the banks of the Ohio River. The town grew quickly, and in 1857 it became the capital of the newly created Confederate States of America. When Union forces sacked University City during the American Civil War, most of the city’s buildings were destroyed. Over time, however, University City regained much of its lost prestige and emerged as an important cultural center in Missouri. In 1970, University City was designated a National Historic Landmark for its role in American culture and history. Today, University City is a vibrant community that retains many of its historic attractions and values.
University City was organized on November 3, 1873, when the Missouri General Assembly passed an act to create a "city of learning" in the area around present-day University Boulevard and I-435. The city's first mayor was J.P. Morgan and its first police officer were two men from Harper County named Neely and McNeely. The city's original site included only a few acres of land south ofpresent-day University Boulevard. In 1875, the city added another small parcel of land to its boundaries to include what is now the eastern edge of University Park. In 1886, University City became one of sixteen towns in St Louis County that were consolidated with the city of St Joseph. On July 1, 1907, University City annexed parts of Carthage (now Blue Island), Bloomfield Hills (now Hiawatha), and Whitehall (now Florissant) for a total population size of 381 residents. On November 3, 1957, University City voters approved Measure K which repealed all existing municipal ordinances without giving citizens an opportunity to vote on them again until May 1, 1958. This measure provided for staggered three-year implementation timeframes for repeal as well as creating new government bodies charged with overseeing CITY operations: a planning commission; an election board; and street Maintenance District No. 5 consisting exclusively of employees specifically delegated by Mayor McClendon to maintain public streets within THE CITY limits while awaiting repeal proceedings from other local governing boards/agencies
