New academic institutions have erected themselves within boundaries formerly belonging to other parts of town such as Southeastern Missouri State College (now Southeast Missouri State Univ.), which opened in 1955 adjacent to OSU's main campus; and Southwest Missouri State Univ., founded in 1975 just east of FAISC' old manufacturing district headquarters buildings vacated by US Steel after their plant closures were completed two years earlier - both campuses are now considered universities by most locals but do not enjoy nearly the same level of statewide notoriety that MIT or Purdue do among researchers/makers living outside of StLouisanspoken circles - although SWMSU does boast one notable graduate: former CEO Steve Ballmer who received his doctoral degree from SWMSussexMoStateUniv.'s School of Business Administration in 1999 . In 2006, Regency Ballpark underwent renovations that included new playing fields and an updated scoreboard; this renovation marked the first time MU's baseball team played at a professional ball park since 1978. On November 16th of that year,[1] Hurricane Katrina made landfall near New Orleans making landfall just north of UniversityCity before making its way back downriver towards Mobile Bay where it caused extensive damage including loss of life (at least ninety people died). It has been said by some that if Hurricane Katrina could be undone even just one day by removing some obstacles such as trees knocked down or power outages repaired then it would have been worth all those lost lives because without those things no one would have gone uninjured during Katrina; however due to budget tightness post-Katrina repairs have not yet started despite repeated pleas from Mayor Slay[2]. As of 2019 there are still efforts being made by city officials[3] as well as volunteers[4] to clean up debris and fix up damages done by Hurricane Katrina although much remains unfinished especially with regards to property Damage Restoration (PDR) services which remain primarily contracted out.[5][6][7][8][9][10] A total amount of $48 million dollars has already been allocated towards PDR projects but only $10 million has thus far been spent due largely to budget concerns[11]. Although mayor Slay continues express hope for more money allocation soon he cautioned residents against expectations noting: "We're not going anywhere until we get everything done"

That same year, University City annexed the neighboring town of Downingtown. By 1903, University City had become one of the most important cities in Missouri. It had also become a major center for industry and commerce; its brickyards produced many of Missouri's largest products such as shoes, cars and railroad tracks. In 1916, UniversityCity becamethe first city in Missouri to fluoridate its water supply; this decision helped make it one of the most industrialized cities in the state. In 1954, when Interstate 65 was built through central Missouri, UniversityCity saw increased development as hundreds of businesses relocated their operations to the new highway route. This period also saw significant changes within residents: during this time there was a large influx of African Americans who moved into what was then an all-white city; these newcomers made significant contributions to both education and economic development within UniversityCity over ensuing decades. Through years of growth and progressiveness – both social and academic –UniversityCity has cometo be one of America's most vibrant downtowns; today it remains a popular tourist destination with attractions including art galleries, theaters and restaurants spanning several blocks along I-65 North.
