University City has had an active gun protection history since the early 1800s. Guns were first allowed in University City in 1851, when the town of University City was founded by the Reverend Dr. James Hutton. In 1865, guns were finally allowed to be carried openly in University City after a heated debate between Mayor John Kline and Gun Owners of America (GOA). The ordinance changed from a prohibition to a licensing system thatallowed individuals to possess firearms only if they were licensed by the city government. From 1870 to 1938, University City also had a regulation against carrying handguns without a license. In 1938, following World War II, University City passed an ordinance increasing gun rights and granting citizens greater access to firearms. This ordinance became effective on September 1, 1938. Under this new law, citizens could now carry handguns openly within city limits as well as place restrictions on where they could keep their firearms. Since 1978, UniversityCity has been one of the few cities in Missouri allowing residents to own and carry pistols without any prior registration or fingerprinting requirements.
University City is a city in the lower Missouri River Valley in eastern Missouri. The population was 31,541 at the 2010 census, making University City the 11th-largest city in Missouri. It is the county seat of St. Francois County. The first European settlers in present-day University City were French traders and missionaries who arrived there in 1763 as part of a fur trading expedition led by Pierre Laclède and James Kegler. The mission Santa Clara de Asís was founded by Franciscan missionaries on May 1, 1765, and began serving the Pottawatomie and Shawnee tribes east of what is now St. Louis County. A school established by these friars called "Saints Peter's Academy" became one of the largest schools for Native Americans in America; it educated Chief Sacagawea's son John Ross when he attended its classes from 1768 to 1771. Jesuit priests also built a Catholic church – "Our Lady of Lourdes" – on land donated by Captain Pierre Laclède near what is now US-6 south of town on July 12, 1804. In 1812 United States troops burned down Saint Francis Cathedral (later rebuilt) after an unsuccessful siege against Fort Moultrie; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of University City's growth as a commercial center due to its proximity to military installations at nearby Fort Moultrie and Cahokia Landing on the Mississippi River. In 1824 Confederate General Robert Ewell attempted unsuccessfully to cross over into Union territory near University City during his raid along I-70; this event helped spur development within the city limits towards heavier industry following Reconstruction times which saw many African American men move into northern cities seeking better economic opportunities than their southern counterparts had experienced back home during slavery days. In 1870 School District No. 20 organized as a single entity under Municipal Authority with boundaries that included much more territory than today including parts of southwest St Francois County - all before any other school district within DuPage County existed! This early success spawned many similar organizations throughout DuPage County over time as educational institutions matured into large businesses that employed tens or hundreds of people across numerous industries - something not possible even 10 years earlier whenDuPage County was just emerging from Reconstruction efforts following Civil War days! Some well-known examples include: Kapp & Co., Armoury Brands Inc., Peabody Coal & Iron Company, First National Bank (now JPMorgan Chase), Sears Roebuck & Co., Wohlgemuth Paper Products Company, Dodge Tire Corporation and various others whose descendants still call University City home today! As employment opportunities increased around World War II due to munitions production located within DuPage County both inside and outside university city limits countless factories opened up manufacturing goods for soldiers overseas including Bombardment Battalion No.(403) 5th Armored Infantry Regiment responsible for producing tanks such as Tigers(A48T), Mark V(AMX10)s(Pt III), Shermans(4th Armored Cavalry Regiment)(MM2). During World War II DUPAGE COUNTY produced more hardware products than ANY other area IN THE UNITED STATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
