University City is a town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 15,852 at the 2010 census. The University of Missouri–Kansas City campus is located in University City. The University of Missouri School of Medicine and Health Sciences is also located in University City. The town was founded by farmers in 1855 as a station on the Kansas Pacific Railroad. In 1865, the Union Army destroyed the town's courthouse and all other buildings in what is known as the "University City Massacre." In 1907, Chancellor Charles Wicker moved his school from Topeka to University City after its original site became unsuitable due to flooding caused by heavy rains. Wicker helped found the KUCS women's basketball team in 1916 and served as its first coach. He died in office at age 73 years old on October 8, 2006. In 1956, university president John Swenzel announced that he would move his school from Topeka to Kansas City because of budget constraints within the university system. Swenzel's decision sparked protests from students and city officials who condemned him for sacrificing academic quality for financial gain. A year later, Swenzel reopened Topeka's flagship building with an all-male faculty and administration while continuing to operate KUCS under new management; this event is known as "the reopening". Despite concerns that Swenzel's decision would lead to discontinued enrollment at KUCS due to their location within city limits rather than outside of them like many universities do, over $100 million has been raised for scholarships and research projects through various organizations since 1956 without any interruption or loss of enrollments or research projects whatsoever! On September 12th 2016 it was announced that Dr Rickard Kluever would be taking over presidency effective January 1st 2017 succeeding Mr Charles Wicker who had retired two months earlier

The first European to call this area home was Jean Baptiste Point du Lac, who arrived in 1764 and named the place after himself. In 1812, General James K. Polk founded West Point Academy in what is now University City. This institution became one of the most prestigious military academies in America and played an important role in American history. Other prominent institutions located in University City include West High School and East Central State College. In 1871, the city became the capital of Missouri under Governor Nathanial Hurlbut. In 1916, University City was renamed after Dr. John Wirt, who served as president of West Point Academy from 1872-1887 and also served as governor of Missouri from 1897-1901. From 1915 until its closure in 1970, Eastern Illinois Agricultural College (EIA) operated out of University City before moving to Carbondale later that year. EIA is now known as Eastern Illinois University Carbondale (EIU). University City has been a major center for education throughout its history and continues to be a vital part of Missouri society today. Today, it serves as a hub for research and education within the state government as well as private businesses and organizations alike. The city's many cultural attractions such as art galleries, museums, theaters, shopping malls and more continue to draw people from across the state each month! One aspect that has not changed over time however is its commitment to diversity which has helped make UniversityCity one of the most multicultural cities in Missouri!
